Poorly girl - do I put her back with sisters tonight?

Recommended Posts

Athina has always had a wheezy chest but today FRing she was hunched and gaping, closing her eyes - the worst I've seen her since I adopted her. She was just standing in one spot.

I've always assumed that its either Gape or Myco. I've made an appointment with the vet for tomorrow as I'll try a Baytril shot and a course (had one - Betty - respond successfully last year).

I brought her into the unheated kitchen about 4pm and she's in the hospital cage. Gave her some nutridrops. She's eaten some sweetcorn and cat food (I know but if she's going to die she might as well die happy  ) and she's taken some layers pellets and corn. The gaping has stopped, she's sitting rather than roosting on the broom handle but I guess that's her way and not wheezing (when I listened to her lungs earlier I couldn't hear any fluid). The symptoms have calmed but I can't imagine that Nutridrops will clear the issue and its marginally warmer in the kitchen than the garden.

Shall I:

Keep her in the kitchen overnight and until until her vets appt tomorrow morning

or:

Put her back in the cube with her 7 buddies and whip her out when I open the cube tomorrow morning - can't leave her all morning as they'll all charge the run door when I open it and they'll all be out!

When Betty was poorly she was out of the cube for about 2 days. I put her back after about 2 days and they were all fine with her. Just not sure what to do with Athina as she seems OK now but I know she has an ongoing problem and it's going to remain cold out there for a while yet. That's why I'm tempted to keep her in until she's had the Baytril shot.

Sorry about the long post - just putting my thoughts into words.

I don't have time to tell you of my extensive experience with ONE wheezy chicken.

You don't say how old she is or how long you have had her. Both Gape worm and Myco would need treating . Myco is highly contagious.. and gape is easily elliminated.

And yes I would definately keep her in doors in a warm not hot room.

There are several ex bats that I have heard of now with chronic wheezing all it seems with different causes and therefore different treatments, ranging from antibiotics, to steroid injections/ tablets and diuretics, also menthol crystals and probiotics. Mine has oxygen too.

good luck at the vet, fingers crossed she makes the night.

Crytals seem to be on tinternet just googled it..

oh yes and VENTOLIN!!!

She's a Miss Pepperpot and about 3.

Just fed the cats in the kitchen (they're all used to them) and she's sitting on her bum in the cage. She took a sip of water so we'll see how she goes.

Oxygen - Sandy you are a real chook nurse! I like the idea of menthol crystals but I can never find them these days. BTW in case you remember them - the Bisley Birds are doing great! All fat, refeathered and fluffy and such characters!
