Experiences with prolapses

Recommended Posts

Pearl has a prolapse problem. She is a white Sussex hybrid, about 4 years old and doesn't seem to lay any more.

Last week we noticed she had a mucky bottom and it didn't look right. A trip to the vets confirmed she had a prolapse that had gone on long enough for the tissue to dry out and become partially necrotic. (This is our first prolapse - now we know what to look for.)

We left the vets with Metronidazole antibiotic tablets, Metacam painkiller/anti-inflammatory, and good old Baytril antibiotic (one of our ferrets is also on this stuff). Pearl is resplendant in the hospital cage in the dining room.

Over the weekend she has repeatedly pushed the prolapse out again. Following the advice here http://littlehenrescue.co.uk/after.aspx we are now very good with the gloves/ointment/replacement, and tried the elastic bandage last night. It has popped out again today. :( Little hen rescue says repeat the process, which we will.

Has anyone else done this? How long has anyone done the bandaging for? Did it work eventually?

I know the vet can put a stitch in - has anyone had success with this treatment? Unfortunately, funds are not as copius as I would like so I'm willing to invest time in non-surgical procedures if there's a chance that they will work.

At the moment Pearl seems to be bright and upright, just disgusted by the indignities being forced upon her.

Thanks for reading.

One of my ex batts had what looked to me like a bad prolapse last year, and I took her to the vet as it looked beyond my capabilities. He pushed it back in and put a stitch in to hold it for 24 hours, and it has been completely successful.

I was worried that it might pop out again the next time she laid, but it has been absolutely fine so far.
