chicks4erin
I'd be grateful for any input - please. After nearly a year of talking about getting chickens, we are finally getting them . My original plan was to get one Go and get a Red Star, Buff Oprington and Plymouth Rock. My 6 year old and I started looking at pictures of Silkie's and reading about their adorable personalities .... well you know where that leads. It then just so happens we see that the feed store in our area is getting a shipment of Silkie's next week. If we get the Silkie's we obviously need a bigger coop. Do I purchase the Cube and have all chicks house together or do you think it would be wise to get 2 Go's ? I've read that since Silkie's are smaller, they can get picked on, would it be better for them to have their own humble abode (the 2nd )? We would put whatever we get into a non-Eglu walk-in-run. Thanks so much. Hubby would like to build this wooden coop. If we go Eglu route we'll use this as our walk-in-run and just not build the coop part. http://www.thegardencoop.com I on the other hand will be doing the cleaning so I'm in favor of Eglu. Are they REALLY that great??? I need to back my case here, help me out. There are just sooo many Eglu haters in the States, I don't know why, seems like such a wonderful product to me. The people who actually have them do seem to love them. Thanks so much!
Chicken shack
I have a with 3mt run which is attached to a 4 by 4 mt WIR with 8 ladies and thier husband. I also have a with extention with the roosting bars removed for 3 ducks, they also have a large area to free range. I also have a rablu that is for emergencies. If you can afford it go for the largest WIR you can build and have the either inside or attached to the side. Access is easier if it is attached to the outside for egg collection and cleaning. Many hen mummy's have different breeds living together. I have hybreds, some are ex batts. You can have 10 in the providing they have a good sized WIR. Hope this helps And yes they are great.
