New layer issue...

Recommended Posts

Hi, we have a new layer (a light sussex). Her first egg was small ( a few days ago) and second a bit bigger and today she laid a whopper. The only issue is that it had some blood etc on it...not much but enough that you could notice it.

I've inspected her and her vent has a bit of a discharge of blood coming from inside it (not really enough to get the others interested nd definitely not flowing...just there really).

Just wondering if it s normal for new layers to get have this and whether it is likely to clear up on its own?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Andrew

When they are new to laying they sometimes lay very large eggs, and it can lead to a slight tear. As they settle down, the eggs should be a more regular size and the problem may not occur again - you're quite right to keep an eye on it, especially because the sight of blood is so tempting to her companions, but if it's dried up and she seems ok, I wouldn't worry. I have had the occasional blood-streaked egg with no further problems. Keep an eye out however, because if she is consistently laying huge eggs she could get a prolapse.

You might have a double-yolker!

Hi Andrew *waves* it was good to see you on Sunday.

As Olly has said, it's perfectly normal for their first big egg and ought to settle down. If you see her looking like laying again, you might want to smear a bit of vaseline around her vent to ease the passage but TBH the small tear is usually internal.
