Unsecure chicken perches

Hi

 

We are considering becoming chicken owners (2/3 bantams) and are looking at getting an eglu go or classic with attached run. My husband would like to site it on concrete as our garden has a clay soil and can get quite wet especially in summer.

 

I have seen lots of posts where people have done this on concrete/concrete slabs but have as yet to find any pictures of anyones set up.

 

My main queries are:

 

how do you secure the run to the concrete base...I assume just placing it on top is not entirely safe?

 

how do you prevent whatever flooring you are using from spreading all over everywhere as the chickens kick it about?

 

how do you keep it dry on rainy days....do the covers eglu sell work well for this?

Putting your classic/go on a concrete base is perfectly safe. You could put http://www.omlet.co.uk/shop/shop.php?cat=Chicken+Keeping&sub=Eglu+Accessories&product_id=584&product_name=Link-a-bord (link-a-bord or similar) around the perimeter to help stop them kicking the bedding all over the place.

 

For water proofing Omlet do do clear run covers or you could look around for some clear tarpaulin ( I just bought some from EBay).

 

Other Omleteers may have some other ideas as well.

We actually didn't have THAT much available space...I miscalculated the measurements

 

The WIR I've got has some kick boards around the based. If you don't fancy the link a bords you could always use some timber or keep any eye out on EBay to see if anyone is selling some off...or I'm sure I've seen them in garden magazines as well being used as raised beds/bedding borders

I recently put my new Go and 2m run on a permanent bed because our rear garden is so small.

 

Firstly I assembled the coop and run. I then made a containment area from 140mm decking on end, allowing 100mm beyond the skirt tapering towards the rear (we really are tight for space!). I allowed approx 400mm beyond the back of the coop to get the poo tray out. I then got my AH to give me a hand to lift the coop/run out and filled the space with 10-40mm woodchip to a depth of 100mm. My three Light Sussex banrams really seem to like it and happily scratch around all day.

 

I don't have the set up on concrete, the run has large tent pegs securing it to the ground beneath the woodchip.

 

This works for me as I live in a windy location so using horse bedding is not an option.
