daxigirl
Thora Birchen is I believe having a go at being broody having comandeered todays eggs in the littlies house. If she is/stays broody how many eggs would she realistically be able to sit on? She's just a tiny modern game bantam. She growled at me, she normally leaps at me for a squish. Redwing
not more than three very small eggs or maybe five of her own Personally I wouldnt use her to be a broody, they dont hold a massive amount of body condition and are very sensitive to environmental changes - I'd say she could be prone to illness or lose a lot of condition
daxigirl
It's worn off this morning, so no worries there then.
daxigirl
No the broody monster has returned with a vengeance. I've just emptied the bedding out the nest box and put a baking wire rack in it's place and made the others a nest box in the run. Perhaps that will fox her. daxigirl
Well I admit defeat. To restore peace in the littluns camp I have relented and bought TB some eggs to sit on. A Wyandotte, a Bitsa and a Scots Grey (banties of course). She was delighted this morning when I presented them to her in the nest box and was busy arranging them when I left her. Hopefully the others will be left in peace by the broody monster.
daxigirl
It will be a miracle if TB hatches anything. I found her sitting on 4 Sunday, so whilst her back was turned whipped the offending egg away. Lo and behold when I went to take her off the eggs in the afternoon to get some refreshments she still had 4, so one of the others must have done one next to her which she then stole. Yesterday when I looked in she had left her eggs to sit on the freshly laid ones , hers were still warm so popped her back on the throne and removed temptation. What a funny little bird she is. daxigirl
I candled TB's eggs when she wasn't looking and 2 are good and 1's a blank which I hid from her. Don't know which eggs are which though so very exciting. She's now ensconced in the cat basket in the lounge much to the others delight at having the coop back. daxigirl
She's hanging in there. We've got a routine now where she comes out for refreshments has a flap & squark then her egg size poop before slowly high stepping (it's like she's creeping back so as not to disturb them) back to her eggs. She is eating in between as the best bits of Garvo are always gone from the bowl. Only trouble is Brillo has now started comandeering the eggs and nest box in the banties coop. daxigirl
Thought those of you who've read about Thora's broodiness would like an update. Thora Birchen is a mummy. When I went to do her water etc she lifted up a fraction to show me a tiny black chick so I took the shell away. Loud cheeping can be heard from the other egg too. What a clever wee bird. . She still growled at me.

daxigirl
There are only 2 out of the 3 she started with and they hadn't been marked so they could be a Scots Grey, a Bitsa or a Wyandotte (can't remember if it was pencilled or laced). The first has black legs and beak. Brillo is sitting on 2 silkies and a poland. I tried putting her in the cat box like TB but she was not impressed and wouldn't settle so had to put her back with the other bantys. daxigirl
No 2 is here. It's black and yellow not dry yet but cheeping and moving about. What a happy mummy I am.
daxigirl
I've had a try at feather sexing TBs babies and it looks to be a couple of girlies. So they're going to be Mavis Cruet and Willo. Total time wasters, spent hours watching her chatting to them and showing them how to eat and drink. I didn't know she could make those noises. She hasn't got the hang of the fact that they can't fly so can't follow when she comes out of the indoor cage. Now Brillo is a whole new kettle of fish in the broody department. She's still in residence in the banty coop as my efforts to move her into the cat box have failed miserably. She cries pitifully for her friends, paces up and down and loses all interest in her eggs. She also loses interest when food is on offer or the 7 week olds need repelling or she's bored. I thought silkies were suposed to be brilliant at broodiness? Really not expecting anything to come from her halfhearted efforts.
miller30
Hi Sarah i always move mine on a batch of duff eggs then they can have a paddy and decide they dont want to be broody or they can go and sit on their eggs in their new house some of them can be a right pain. How are all your other birds did you manage to sex the little ones in doors would you like a couple of lovely little day old turkey poults when they hatch out the incy so you can grow your own christmas dinner leanne
daxigirl
Hi Leanne The 3 Marans boys got a new home but the other 4 didn't (feel very guilty) . Don't think I'm cut out for a Turkey under the circumstances. It turned out the Legauna's were black legs = girls and the yellow legs = boys. daxigirl
I've removed Brillo's eggs as she was doing such a rubbish job (I candled them just in case but they had stopped developing quite early on by the look of it). She seems to have got over it. On the other hand Thora B is doing wonderfully with her 2 babies. They've moved to the rabbit hutch in the garden this morning. I think that Mavis Cruet is the Wyandotte and Willo is the Scots Grey. (Is anyone willing to let me send them a photo to put on here as I'm so rubbish at it?)
