Incubation & power cuts- RESULT!

Recommended Posts

I set 6 eggs last Saturday. For the first time in 2 1/2 years we have had 2 power cuts this week (Wednesday and Friday) due to the weather. Both times the power was off for about 4 or 5 hours. The first time I wrapped the incy in a duvet which did no good whatsoever and the temp dipped to about 25 degrees. The second time I was out when it went and room temp was about 19 degrees so I assume the incy dropped to about that but didn't check in my hurry to get the eggs warm again. Anyone want to guess what the chances of a success are?

I assume hatching might be delayed so don't know if to bother candling at about day 10 or not. What do you think?

You are right - the hatching is likely to be delayed

When the power goes off resist the temptation to open the incubator and dont cover it to keep it warmer, just leave it and things should be fine

I'd maybe candle at 12 days as you'll have a slightly clearer view to see that things are moving

Day 12 today and I think I have 5 good eggs out of 6, IF I'm right I have 2 leghorns, 2 polish and 1 black araucana that are fertile. I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch though. The black araucana eggs are green so the hardest to see through so really not sure on them but the others were quite clear although not enough to see any movement.

We have had 5 eggs hatch. Three hatched yesterday and 2 pipped yesterday but hatched during the night. I am amazed we ended up with a successful hatch as we has another pwer cut during the week that lasted between 4-6 hours. Fortunately the electricity board have fixed the problem now so I don't need to worry about the heat lamp going off for the chicks.

The little brinsea ec 10 I have seems very small for 5 chicks let alone 10 so I am setting the brooder up so as soon as the last one is fluffed up I can give them a little more space. Overall I am really pleased with the result.

So I have 2 lavender leghorns, 2 black polish with white heads and 1 black araucana. Now the wait to see how lucky I am with my cock/hen ratio.

once the first hatchlings are 24hrs old they can be moved it'll give the last 2 time to rest and dry out in peace, also if there's a build up of condensation it'll slow the drying time down for the last 2

They are all nearly dry now so I have an old vivarium warming up as their first home. I am off out in a bit to buy some chick crumb, I didn't want to buy it before and then have none hatch and I've got a while before they need it.
