I started feeding my girls pellets which they seemed to take or leave depending on mood, although accidentally got mash the other day and my girls love it and eat every bit of it, I think its easier to add things into and I can make it warm or cold.

 

What does everyone else prefer ?

Mine have a mixture.. It started when I wanted to change from mash to pellets and had mash left over.. They also love it mixed with water into a porridge ,their beaks get all mucky though.

I posted a similar question a couple of weeks back as had mash for new ex batts and the older girls seemed to prefer it. Plus, it takes them longer to eat mash so keeps them busy!

My girls have mash. It can be messier than pellets, but the hens LOVE it and it keeps them occupied for much longer.

I started of with mash, But was using almost a whole sack a week! They wold flick out all the bits they didn't fancy, so had so much wastage, I now use layers and last so much longer.

I had the same problem as Margaret, started off with mash which the girls promptly re-decorated the run with and so changed to pellets. Although it took my ladies a few days to get used to the pellets they did and the wastage was significantly reduced

I've been adding hot water to the mash, I didnt realise you could feed it dry!! But the girls eat every morsel, I've been giving them 110g dry weight each.( Plus limeflour and few mealworms or a bit of dried mixed corn) perhaps Im not feeding them enough ??

 

They never managed to finish their pellets, ever.

Generally chickens do seem to prefer mash to pellets. However, don't worry that the hens don't finish their pellets. Hens don't overeat - their feeders should be kept topped up so that they can feed ad lib throughout the day and when their crops are full they will stop eating. My feeders hold enough for about 4 days worth of food and I never let them get empty otherwise I get hungry hens protesting loudly outside!

My girls absolutey love mash but I've changed to pellets now so that my D'Anvers in particular can keep their face furnishings clean and tidy

My girls love their Omlet organic mash. I keep deliberting whether or not to change to Garvo pellets but somehow go back and order the mash because, as someone has said on here, you can easily add things to it like bokashi.
