I'm impressed your vet would operate. Hope she recovers ok, shame he didn't take the ovaries out while he was in there (if you can).

He did try, but he said he would have had to open up her sternum to get to them as they are quite a way up

 

Pudding must be feeling a little better this morning as she as just woken me up wanting some breakfast , and she is chattering alot.

 

Think am gonna go down the superlorin route, as it would be a shame to go this far and then just have her PTS.

I was sort of put on the spot a bit. The vet rang while she was under anaesthetic telling me he couldn't break the eggs and asking me what he should do, (I was at the till with my shopping when he rang ) so I said "just do it".

Looking back now I should have said "let her go", but didn't so will do the best I can for her now.

Well you wouldn't have said do it if it wasn't what you really wanted. You can only trust in the vet at these times, wouldn't it be easier if they knew the right thing to do. You can look forward to a happy summer with her now.

Pudding is not particularly happy about being in the cat carrier in ther dark, which is making me feel a bit mean , but she has tucked into some yoghurt, cucumber and tomatoes early this morning and has also drunk quite a bit (have put a little critical care in her water too).

 

I have just been googling the superlorin implant, and am at the size of the needle. But if her "insides are all wrong" as the vet says, I feel I have no other option. I just wouldn't want her to be PTS after all she has endured. She is such a tough cookie and I love her to bits. But if it would be best for her then I would have her PTS.

oh just a quick reply , if you email me your email I can forward you a really long email with a lots of info on the implant, I took it painstakingly from another forum, removing all the" good luck, well done" posts and only keeping the relevant ones, to email to my vet.

I will pm you my phone number so that I know (if you would like that is ) when you have emailed me your email address.

Bless her and bless you , you have done the best for her but your will need to implant asap if you are going to before the next lot of eggs drop and get into trouble.

Some of us have had very good results with the implants.

 

Don't worry about the size of the needle - it really doesn't seem to bother them that much. Mine don't even make a sound now and scoff grapes quite happily immediately afterwards.

If you go for an implant you should know that around a week or two after the first implant it can force them into a hard moult that can make them feel quite unwell. Mine more or less took to their beds for 3 days and did not eat or drink much. I hand fed the weaker one with avian electrolytes / critical care formula / nutridrops. They were OK after that and it hasn't happened with subsequent implants.

Thanks for the warning Egghead68, I have been reading about some of the effects of the implant. I have it ordered and should be at the vets on Monday.

 

Vet says he will knock her out to do it as he has never done one before, let alone on a feisty, flappy chicken .

 

Just hope all goes well and she doesn't lay any eggs for a while so at least it will give her body time to heal .

Still daren't let her mingle with the others yet though, as Scoot spotted her bald patch straight away and decided to investigate it .

Will she be able to pass any egg follicles that drop into her oviduct till everything kicks in?

Hopefully really sounds horrid but hopefully the shock of the op will have stopped her egg laying a bit naturally.

Keep a good feel of her bot to if she stars to swell could need amoxycillin for egg related internal issues.

It seems to work best...

Her crop has been slow to empty for a while now. She still has a good appetite though.

The vet seemed to think that one of her intestines looked to have ruptured somewhere through her oviduct but couldn't find the rupture as there was no fresh blood or clots or anything (I think that would explain the build up of eggs and slow crop, I dunno ).

hopefully the shock of the op will have stopped her egg laying a bit naturally.

I'm hoping so until she has the superlorin.

Uh oh, found this under the roosting bars this afternoon, it appears to be a shell less egg (mainly yolk with clot type blood in it). Both poop and yolk looks to have come from the same pipe (for want of a better word) but not sure.

I'm assuming it's from Pudding , although she isn't showing any signs of being unwell. I examined her and I think I can feel what appears to be an egg . She hasn't crouched at all .

I wouldn't put her through the ordeal of another op, so will just have to keep an eye on her and see how she goes .

Yes, she had the Suprelorin implant on May 28. She hasn't done any crouching which is why I am surprised at this, I think it maybe too late for another as it feels like there is an egg already in the pipeline .

No signs of being unwell at all, but she is such a tough little chook .
