Henslaved
Last night I noticed that Pudding wasn't her usual perky self, so I picked her up to examine her. There was a very small amount of clear liquid coming from her vent (I assumed to be lubrication). On feeling her underneath towards the back end, I felt an egg. So I popped her in the nest box and left her to it. Half hour later she'd passed a softie (intact) but still looked miserable, so I felt underneath again and the egg I felt earlier was still there . I popped her back in the nest box and left her to it, as it was late I decided to leave her there till morning. Checked on her this morning and she had passed yet another softie (broken this time). I had another feel underneath and the egg I had felt the previous night was STILL there . Although she seems perkier today. Was this one at the back of the queue and will she pass this one on her own? I am planning on giving her a warm bath a little later today to help relax her a little and to wash off last nights softie that she has slept in . Is there anything else I could do to help or should I just wait and see if she passes it on her own?
Egluntyne
Are you absolutely sure that you are feeling an egg and not an internal structure such as the gizzard which is surprisingly low down?
Henslaved
I assume it's an egg. It certainly feels egg shaped ish but it does feel bigger than what she normally produces. Not a softie. Bigger than a golf ball and hard, sort of just below and behind her vent. She seems ok, although I don't think she has eaten yet today as her crop feels empty (which is sort of good news as she is recovering from sour crop ). I can't think what else it could be . Will try the bath a bit later and see what happens .
Henslaved
Well no luck with the warm bath, the egg sized "lump" is still there , but she's nice and clean now . I can't think what else it could be .
Henslaved
The vet confirmed it this evening, it is an egg (which is still there). He couldn't remove it so he said to give her another 24hrs to see if she passes it on her own. He also said there is another one not too far behind . So am that she does the deed tomorrow. Egghead68
Would k-y jelly help? And if she is not eating or drinking maybe at least syringe-feeding her water and electrolytes into her beak? Giving her some calcium might also help stimulate the contractions (sorry for incorrect technical terms). Fingers crossed for tomorrow. One of mine once passed three in a row and then leapt up and ate everything in sight.
Henslaved
She is still eating and drinking. Since she passed the two softies she seems pretty perky. Might give her a little extra calcium tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
Henslaved
Egg still there, and crop is all squishy and full again .
Duncan08
Sorry to hear that, fingers crossed she is OK.
Henslaved
As if things couldn't get any worse, the other egg has caught up and if I feel gently I can actually hear them knocking together, a bit like the noise you hear when you put eggs in a pan of water to boil . No idea why the one at the front of the queue won't pass. Back to the vets tomorrow .

sandyhas3chucks
les hope she gets them out tonight, but id=f you ca feel them, the vet will be able to at lease get one out, maybe a calcium injection to help the contractions if he cant remove the 2nd one ? Henslaved
Took her to a different vet today that seemed more chicken savvy. She confirmed that there are two eggs but one of them has travelled further along. The one she could feel through the vent was not the same one she could feel underneath. She was a little reluctant to give her a calcium injection due to the effect it can have on internal organs if given too much, so she gave her an injection of oxytocin and said to get some calciform and see how she goes. Also explained to me that she thinks Pudding doesn't have sour crop it's more likely to be pendulous and will just need monitoring and emptying from time to time. So the two eggs are still there, but they seem to be on the move, albeit slowly. she passes them soon.
Egghead68
Oh poor girl. I hope the oxytocin does the trick.
Henslaved
Unsure if she has passed one or not as I found the remains of 2 eggs in the run both simillar colour to what Pudding lays so was hard to tell (hope this isn't the start of egg eating ) She has been in the nest box a couple of times, but I haven't seen her straining. Can feel one still there but am reluctant to feel for the other . Also her crop is giving her trouble again tonight. She was doing the break dancing thing with her neck when I massaged it she sounded all gurgly and full of wind . Poor girl, back to the vets on Monday . Henslaved
Her crop was just about empty this morning so it may not be sour crop . But more importantly the 2 eggs are STILL there. Strange thing is she seems perfectly normal, eating and drinking ok, preening herself and wot not. I have spoken to the vet this morning and he said to give her another couple of days, then I have to make the agonizing decision as to whether they operate to remove them or it's curtains for poor Pudding . Henslaved
Got Pudding booked in at the vets tomorrow for egg removal under anaesthetic, but if he can't get them out via the normal route I don't want him to have to open her up to remove them. I think that could be asking for more trouble. Fingers crossed he can do it .

Egghead68
How did it go?
Henslaved
Not as planned . He couldn't get them out the normal route, although he did manage to get a needle in one but couldn't break the shell without severely bruising her. She had to undergo surgery to remove them . There were 3 eggs in there , the 2 we could feel and one that had been crushed . He also said that her insides didn't look "normal". He seemed to think that part of her intestines was in the oviduct , which would explain the blockage but he said it must've happened some time ago as there was no fresh blood or clots or anything. I'm not too sure but I think he said he couldn't find where the rupture was either . TBH I think this was the first time he had seen the insides of a live hen. He said to keep an eye on her and see how she goes. But I see it as having two choices, either a superlorin implant every six months or PTS . At the moment Pudding is recovering from her ordeal in a cat carrier inside in the dark with some food and water, looking rather sorry for herself and sore I feel terrible about putting her through it .
