Chalkhill Blue

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that Merrydale are selling Chalkhill Blue hens claiming they lay 100% blue eggs. Looking at the pics they look exactly the same as a Columbine, does anyone have one? Have they gone overboard on the 100% or has the breed been advanced?

Edit: doh, forgot link!

If they are a htbrid I dont see how they can guarantee that. There is an Araucana hybrid on sale around here that has a 100% guarantee of laying blue or green eggs but nothing that is legbar based as your link clearly is, the best I think you could hope for is 80% though some sellers claim up to 95%

I'd maybe give them a call and ask how this hybrid is different, they may have a good explanation, after all they have a good reputation

This quote from their hens for sale page is slightly confusing though ...

100% of hens will lay a blue or green shelled egg, occasionally they will lay a cream or pastel coloured egg.

I'd say if you want guaranteed blue eggs then look for a really good strain of Araucana or Cream Legbars and buy pure bred

Hmmm, how do they work that out; hens won't change from laying blue/green to cream eggs; it's one or t'other

They look different to the hybrid I bought from them just before they stopped selling hens two years ago, I think they were Merrydale Crested but I may be wrong and they were 80% chance of blue green eggs. I was lucky one lays a blue eggs and the other a bluey green eggs.

When we went a few weeks ago to buy hatching things they did not have the Chalkhill Blue then as I could not resist a look at the chooks and a chat about the girls we have bought from them in the past.
