Edgeman
Hi shredded paper is what the man from omlet told us to use. I have been using it since last week, when Pheobie our oldest chuck started laying. I do change it often, more so in this damp weather were having ! Our junk mail makes good shredding paper through our £9.99 shreder from Partners ! I hope this helps

Couperwife
we use shredded paper, but if it gets wet it sometimes sticks to the eggs I think that the chooks try to read it when they are laying and it goes all over the place
bronze
I dont think its the rain that makes it stick. Its where theyre using glue to try and piece together our bank statements

KTee
Not only do I find it excellent for putting in the nesting box but it is perfect for wiping it out especially in this foul (oops!) weather. I change it every day, it takes just a few seconds. The used bits go on the compost heap and it's virtually gone within a week.
Egluntyne
Its a good way of preventing identity theft too.! How many thieves would want to go through your compost heap to stick together pooey bank statements I wonder?
Helly Welly
We use shredded paper too, it always sticks to the eggs because of the coating eggs have on them when they, erm, pop out! My girls eat the shredded paper!

Dippy Egg
I too was advised to use shredded paper in the nesting box by the Omlet staff. I tried it for a while but switched to straw because I wasn`t keen on having bits of paper around the run & prefer the look of straw. Don`t think my hens noticed any difference though. I suppose if you shredded newsprint and you have pale feathered birds then they might look a bit grubby. I remember reading about a rescue dog on the No More Tears website that had turned from white to black as she had spent all of her wretched life in a puppy farm sleeping on newspapers. Poor little creature
Jules.
I use shredded paper- in fact I bought a shredder especially- my parents used to burn all my confidential waste on their coal fire, or I used to take it into work. A tip I read for not having paper all over the run is to tear your paper up smaller before shredding so that the strips are shorter. Stops the girls having paper wrapped aboung their legs when they come out of the nesting box
menagerie
Omlet man told us to use it too - but we forgot to ask whether it matters if it is cross cut or not? We've got a cross-cut shredder and the pieces it makes are very small. Any idea?
