Bantambabe
ES is doing his CBT on Saturday and we're about to get him a 50cc moped. He's 16. Anyone know of reasonable companies for insurance. I tried asking Aleksandr Meerkat, but the best for 3rdPF&T was about £550 and 3rdP only was still £
Lewis
I'm no help, sorry, but £280 sounds quite good to me! My car insurance this year is just under £2000
Bantambabe
Thanks Lewis Ouch!!! £2000 for car insurance - I'd best tell him to start saving. I know £280 isn't too bad, but having always insured my car fully comp, choosing 3rd Party only seems a bit reckless. I'll get used to the idea I'm sure - especially when the compulsory XS is something like £400 on 3rdPF&T - on a £600 bike! - Better to save the money on the premium and buy some decent security
Chucky Mama
I would try somewhere that doesn't appear on a price comparison website. As they don't have to pay to appear on a comparison website they can pass on the saving to customers.
Bantambabe
Oh ok - I'd tried Direct Line as we have 2 cars with them, but they don't do bikes. Might ask at the garage today when we go to have a look at a bike who they would recommend And p'raps ask the instructor for the CBT tomorrow. Thanks
Looney
Sorry no advice on insurance, just wanted to say good luck to your ES with his CBT. I did mine when I was 16 and I'm still convinced the only reason I passed was because the tester didn't ever want to see me again! I left rather a large dent in his big, shiny exhaust pipe on his motorbike - oops Getting a moped gave me such freedom, growing up in a village 10 miles from anywhere with parents reluctant to give lifts was a bit limiting! abwsco
Have a look on MSE. Boss has a scooter insured with a specialist firm but I can't for the life of me remember the name
Chickendoodle
Try Bennetts - they specialise in bike insurance
Olly
I was just going to say that there are specialist firms who do bike insurance - buy a copy of Ride or a similar magazine and there will be loads of small ads. I know what you mean about fully comp v third party, but for a relatively low-cost moped it probably isn't worth the extra premium.
gazzagerkin
try carol nash or e bike
Redwing
try these people: http://www.devittinsurance.com/ They are brokers but have come up with two cheap lots of insurance for my husband who rides his moped on a CBT One word of warning - this is apparently very common in bike policies, if you have a total loss payout on your bike (ie its written off) you still have to pay the full years insurance, you cant transfer it to a new bike - try to find a policy without this clause
keyhole kate
OH used rampdale for YD and thought they were reasonable
Bantambabe
Oo thanks for that warning Redwing - will look out for that. Have tried getting quotes from a few - Carole Nash was twice the price of the others! We bought the moped yesterday so now waiting for him to pass ( ) his CBT today - although I'm told you have to die or blatantly ignore the instructor to fail. And also for the registration to get through the system at DVLA so that the insurance companies recognise it. Moped being delivered on Weds - I can't wait to have a go! Guess I shall be busy on Monday phoning round the companies. His friend has gone with Rampdale too - they were very good at £254 - so think I'll start there Thanks for all your help
