Tetanus in children

Recommended Posts

Hello I know there are some nurses on here so I'm hoping someone will know a definitive answer.

Tonight my 7 year old son has managed to put his foot through a rusty drain hole cover (sewer drain if that makes any difference) it has left a few bloody gashes to his leg. Although one gash is fairly deep it is nothing that would usually require medical treatment. However given that the metal was rusty and covering a sewer does he need a tetanus jab. He had all the routine jabs he was called for as a baby.

Thanks to anyone that knows.

Thanks everyone. Spoken to NHS direct (who were more concerned whether he was awake and conscious, no hes in bed now  ) anyway apparently he is covered under the routine jabs given but we need to watch out for infection.

Thanks again

Shouldve had preschool booster at 3-5 yrs of age which includes tetanus - that lasts till teenage booster at 14-15 yrs of age. Occasionally medical staff may advise an extra but if NHS said hes covered then fine. keep an eye out for infection - redness, red lines going from wound outwards high temp etc. If in doubt take to your local WIC. good luck and wish him well
