Stan the dog was castrated yesterday, it is now hell in this house. He has the cone collar on and is constantly whimpering. I ended up sleeping on the sofa last night as he would not settle. He has always been really good at night from day one. How i am going to keep him calm and not jumping up for the next 14 days i have no idea....

One of my labs was like that, the night he came home he was really miserable and sat on OH's lap and stared him in the eye whimpering - OH was so upset he cried  . The lab I've got now never even noticed anything had gone  .

Hopefully Stan will start to feel better quite soon, wishing him well.

Perhaps you could take The Cone of Shame off and put a box muzzle on instead. A dab of menthol (Vaporub is fine) near the wound will stop him mithering it. I don't use a cone on my dogs, partly because it distresses and winds them up and also because they have narrow heads and the cones don't stay on.

You can get box muzzles here.

Here's one on a friend's dog; we use them for lure racing. :D

If you can supervise him with the cone off you can take it off and put it back on when you can't be with him, or if he bothers the wound despite you supervising him. Make sure that you can get it back on though before you take it off. You could also fit him with a DAP collar which may help settle him.

They can still drink while wearing them (the dog might need a bigger bowl), I only out it on when I can't supervise them, after a couple of days they just ignore the wound anyway.

Remind me what size/dog you have; I might have a spare muzzle to fit; save you buying one and you're close enough to do a handover.

eta actually found these ones on amazon with bad reviews. So now trying to measure him for the other one (easier said than done) and hopefully get the order in before 1pm and have it on its way!
