cookie6279
hi every one I have a young bluebelle hen with a little black comb will it turn red at all or will it stay black she is a long way off laying yet help aprriciated thanks
Gallina
Some hens do have a black comb. I didn't know that Bluebelles could have one: I am sure everyone would be interested to see a picture. If it is black when she is young, I imagine that it will stay black. (I am assuming your Bluebelle is not suffering from frostbite, as although this July has been miserable, it hasn't been that bad; and also of course that she is well.) My Bluebelle followed the standard course: she had a pale pink comb when she was young which went red when she came into lay. Here is a picture of her before she started laying:
Sheilaz
Hi, do you know her age? I should imagine her comb will get bigger &change to red as she comes in to lay. Does she seem healthy? If so, nothing to worry about & the comb will change when she matures.
cookie6279
yes she is healthy and is eating and drinking as normal when I got her she was eight weeks off point of lay so we have had her for 3 weeks up to now I will get a picture of her and you will see its only a little comb thanks for your replys i was just a bit worried

craftyhunnypie
Oh she is so so lovely - makes me want a bluebell even more! Only a few weeks to wait now! She doesn't even look as tho she's got a comb or that one has started to develop yet so I really wouldn't worry! She's a beauty, her markings are gorgeous! Bless her! harveypup
We have 2 Bluebelles and Clover looks just like yours She too has a red/black comb and lays the most lovely mauveish eggs which are more often than not double yolkers. Vera on the other hand lays very pale almost white eggs
Gallina
She is lovely -- and makes me want another Bluebelle. And they lay so well too: every day. Your hen is much darker generally around the head than mine: her beak is much darker too. She doesn't have much of a comb at all yet, but it does look as though it will be dark. It will look very elegant with her grey-blue feathers.
Cinnamon
She is lovely, isn't she? My Blue Belle had a darker comb to start with, but it reddened up with age......I think their are pictures on the link below
craftyhunnypie
Has anyone got a picture of what a bluebell's egg looks like? I'm wondering what it means by a plum blush? Emma.x
Sarah 2
When we went to pick up a Bluebelle we were told by the breeder that her comb could possibly go black. So I don't think it's anything to worry about. We ended up with a Brown Nick instead.
Gallina
Nicola calls what I would call a Bluebelle a Blue Comet. Are they the same thing? This one looks very like yours. My Bluebelle has rather boring eggs: I can't see a purple blush on them.
kannie
Our bluebelle, Lottie, has a red comb and very big wattles! She's just started laying and her eggs look like a pretty ordinary sort of light brown. Shes very pretty but completely scaredy and scatty. Her feathers are wonderfully soft and silky. And she's quite big! I hope she'll get a bit tamer.... This is her a few weeks ago, when her red bits were smaller:
Cinnamon
I think that a Blue Belle & a Blue Comet are the same.Medowsweet do the "Belle" hens & someone else names them "Comets", but I can't remember who My Blue Belles aggs were just pale brown.....nothing unusual
bronze
Theyre lovely. The black comb makes her even more stylish. are there any other names for them as I've never come acorss any hatching eggs with either of those names
menagerie
Are they a cross breed? If so - any idea what from?
beach chick
my 2 bluebells started off with black combs when we got them mid-May. both have now been laying a good few weeks, and the combs are much bigger. Tara's is bright red but Paris' is a darker red....
kannie
Has anyone got a picture of what a bluebell's egg looks like? I'm wondering what it means by a plum blush?Emma.x Actually I've looked at Lotties eggs again (9 now!) and I know what they mean by a plum blush. They do have a slightly pinky hue to them. They're also much rounder than other eggs. Are other peoples bluebells very scaredy and scatty?
kannie
We had 5 of Lotties eggs for breakfast, and 2 were double yolkers! They're all quite small though - do Bluebells always do small eggs, or is it just because she's young?
Sarah 2
They're all quite small though - do Bluebells always do small eggs, or is it just because she's young? I don't have a Bluebell but I imagine it's because she's young. Mine laid really small ones and now they're about 80g. So give her a few weeks. FMJ-51
One of my Bluebells has a black comb - it seems to be fully formed now, with a hint of red. She is laying well and seems healthy. Will her comb turn red (she is approx 24 weeks old)
kannie
I don't know, but I imagine that's just her colouring! Lottie's comb was always red, it didnt start black.
goodinparts
Barbara, my bluebelle, has a red comb with a kind of black edging (bit like Victorian mourning cards ) She is definitely the boldest of my chooks, the best at escaping but not over fond of being cuddled - though she crouches very well indeed! Her eggs are usually a fairly standard light brown but occasionally they do have a vaguely pinkish tinge, which I guess could, if you were feeling poetic, be categorised as a "plum blush". She's an utterly reliable layer - an egg a day come rain, snow or shine. Suspect she will pay for this later, but it's in her genes, isn't it. beach chick
gosh this is an old thread! has reminded me of Tara and Paris, my 2 bluebells who were 2 of my first 4. Tara Palmer-Tompkinson was killed by a visiting labrador (eek!) and Paris Hilton was foxed.... lovely girls though, brilliant layers, and their combs definitely went darker over time.
