More student flat woes

Recommended Posts

ES is supposed to be moving into a private rental flat next Tuesday. I got a bit suspicious when I hadn't seen any paperwork - turns out he and the other boys had ignored emails from the property management company  . Despite wanting ES to be responsible for this himself, I've had to take control of the situation and try to get everything sorted.

One boy told ES last week that he was backing out (two weeks before moving in  ) but thankfully has now changed his mind. He still hasn't paid the deposit or signed the lease agreement. The third boy still hasn't paid his deposit. All 3 have to have paid or they won't get the keys on Tuesday.

I'm feeling increasingly anxious about the reliability of both of these boys :? . My son has admitted he was stupid not to have kept on top of this and insists he will now but will the other two?

There's a lot to be said for Uni halls of residence.

I agree - halls of residence should be compulsory for their entire uni stay (although I know its not practical)

We have almost had the opposite of your problem - my daughters lot all seem to be bossy madams who all want to debate every last little teeny detail, then vote on it,before anything is done

Therefore everything is taking aaaaaaaaaaaaages to sort out......it took them weeks to decide on a Broadband package,so we just went & signed up in the end, with a 48 hour get-out clause, then told them that they could let us know if there were any objections.

My daughter has been voted as 'head housemate' who deals with all the day to day things, the landlord, gets the bills paid & so forth, but one other young lady in particular is trying to take over everything, leaving my girl feeling stressed & unappreciated.

it doesn't help matters that she seems to have a very overbearing lawyer mum who wants to control the whole thing.

Still, they have all paid up & its check-in day tomorrow,so I get to meet them all (& their evil mums!!!)

Good luck with your lot too!

Did your daughter get landed with the tiny room in the end, Cinnamon? We're hoping ES gets first pick of rooms as he did all the work finding the flat (the other 2 haven't even seen it yet  ).

I think ES should be in charge of bills too, as although he's been pretty useless to date, I think he'll be more responsible than the other two. At least I can have a bit of control over things that way too!

Yep, 'the cupboard under the stairs' - we will see it for the first time tomorrow.....and she did all the work finding the house too.

The bossy madams bossy lawyer Mum instigated the 'vote' on who should get which room, when my girls was not present to be there & did not agree to the vote either

I am going armed with a tape measure, the Husband & an Ikea catalogue :roll::lol:

At least "bossy madams" and their mums are more likely to be in control of important things like signing agreements and paying rent  . I've no idea if these boys' mums are having anything to do with the flat or not  .

Would you believe that 2 of the boys in the flat have the same surname and 2 have the same first name (and my son has both the shared first and surname  ).

Virgin (I know,I know..............)

But they were with Virgin already, the lads who had the house before, they gave a good deal in BB,phone & TV, & also gave us free installation too, which saved another £60.

The house is in a good area for Virgin too & is on cable.

We have to go there next Wednesday to await the Virgin man & get it all set up - I fully expect him not to turn up

...I wonder if they would be so keen to give the smallest room, if the rent was apportioned on m2 floor space in their rooms!

Tomorrow is moving in day but the drama continues  . Boy 3's mum has now decided she won't be guarantor (despite having signed the agreement :wall: ) so dad is now going to be instead. He doesn't have an email address (which I find surprising in this day and age) but requires one to complete the guarantor checks etc. New lease agreement now required. If boy 3 can send the signed pages electronically, we should be able to move in tomorrow afternoon. If not, not  .

I've taken tomorrow off so he better blinking had  .

It was touch and go till about 2pm but eventually we got the go ahead to move in (after I'd paid boy 3's rent  ).

The flat is brilliant. The lady doing the inventory said it was the best student flat she'd seen 8) . Boy 3 is getting the tiny room (and a slap from me when I see him) but the other 2 tossed for the biggest room and my son got it  .

Few things to get sorted like lino on the kitchen floor and his bedroom window doesn't open but generally it's in great condition.

Same can't be said about the stair which is absolutely manky, the back garden is a weed infested, wheelie bin jungle, there was a used prophylatic on the road beside our car and 2 druggies staggered past us as we were going in but hey ho, all part of life's rich tapestry  .

Glad it went well.

Our check-in turned up lots of problems - cracked & unstable windows (SO glad that the Husband came with me to see this), damp - especially in Devons room, where the wall was so wet that a bed leg was sodden too, not cleaned well, the garden a tip.....

Also, despite the landlord saying he bought it 5 years ago as is & had done nothing to it,a quick Google shows that he actually bought it 3 years ago as a 3 bedroomed house. He then halved the kitchen to make another bedroom - my daughters room. This also meant he had to remove an outside door & install a window, which is fine, but it doesn't have a fire escape hinge,so should there be a fire downstairs,my girl could not open the window wide enough to escape through it

This is a regulation - again I am glad my window fitter/builder Hubby was there.

On top of this, all the patching up outside to cover old doorways has been rendered but not painted,so it is not sealed, hence the damp.

Anyone doing a check in,I would advise to take someone along with you who knows about building regs!

OMG Cinnamon, what a nightmare.

My Step-Daughter has a flat share in Stirling. This is now the start of year 2. The BIGGEST problem they have had...and are still having is getting people to pay their share on time. the bank account all the bills comes out of is in her name so she has to fund extra just to stop things bouncing and mucking-up her credit rating.

Luckily she is now getting to grips with it and is beginning to toughen up with the other flat mates. It wouldn't be so bad but one of the main culprits is her boyfriend and his parents give him an allowance to pay for the flat....they have now stopped giving him the money and pay it straight into her account :lol::lol:

The other grip was getting peeps to pay their share of the telephone bill!!!! :wall:

Oh yes and when 1 flat mate decided to move but didn't tell anyone until they 'accidently' found out 2 weeks before hand and then had to try and find someone else to rent the room!!!!:silenced:

They are cable,yes...it was cheaper to buy a package with the phone line & choose not to activate it than it was just to buy just the Broadband & TV package!

It went well today - Mr Virgin turned up at 11,was gone by 12,so we were home by 1.30 :P

Just got the Ikea delivery to contend with now :lol:
