Bantams and more eggs

Recommended Posts

The bantams are growing. I took a picture of them on the weekend whilst cleaning out their eglu and thought you might like to see them. They are such cuddly things, who'd have thought that chickens can be so cute and cuddly?! Here they are, what little madams the pekins are, the silkie is very sweet but all of them tame.

I bought more hatching eggs which came by Royal Mail. I know eggs posted are likely to get a rough ride but I was disappointed to be throwing 9 eggs away as they weren't developing. So I decided to collect eggs yesterday. I wanted some dark layers so I collected these maran eggs from a lovely lady who is obviously very dedicated to breeding. Here's a picture of the eggs next to Belle's egg (the Bluebell hybrid) for colour comparison.

And a picture of my incubator filled with bantam Silkies, Barbu D'Uccles, welsummers and marans eggs.

I thought you might like an update on the 'more eggs'. They've hatched now! Well, they've nearly all hatched. I still have marans and cream legbars in the incubator. The marans have pipped and the cream legbars will be locked down tomorrow.

I think we have blue partridge silkies, as well as black.

The plan is for the bantams to stay at home with me and the big uns to go to my parents smallholding, where I have the run of most of the outside anyway with the horses.

Hope you like!

Eeee your chicks are so lovely! :D I don't know about my chickens but I am feeling very broody!! My columbine is broody at the moment and I wish I could give her some fertile eggs. Maybe when I have some more room...

I love the little feathers on their tiny legs (or as the receptionist at my vet calls them 'chicken trousers!)

Yes, silkies are definitely growing on me... :anxious: Pekins were my firm favourite but I don't know now, I do like the silkies, I see what you all mean now!

Mrs B, I am a fan of feathered legs too (can you tell?! ) I like the fluff and feather, what can I say?!

My marans have hatched, 6 out of 6 (these eggs were collected though, not posted) and my three cream legbar eggs have all pipped. I'm expecting to see at least one CLB chick tomorrow.
