hilda-and-evadne
What with the cereal crop failures in the US, the cost of animal feed (and anything else made from wheat) is likely to increase enormously in the foreseeable future. Does the panel think that red lentils would be an acceptable alternative to pellets, in the short term? Or longer term? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentil It seems to be poultry feed in Third World countries. As well as feeding humans.
johnandkymberley
Hiya, I don't know about giving them just red lentils, if anything I would mix pellets and lentils to equal amounts, will bulk out your pellets then. So to 10kg of pellets add 10kg of lentils? That's what I would do in your situation J&K
Egghead68
I don't know - are you thinking of cooking them first?

Bramble
It's not somthing I would have thought of either ... would be interested to know whether they'd need to be cooked or not ... I'm guessing they would?
Olly
Would lentils be any cheaper than chicken pellets? Unless you've got a bulk supplier I'd have thought they would be dearer. I know that historically hens have been fed on all sorts of things from household s"Ooops, word censored!"s to 'Tottenham pudding', but I'd stick with pellets because they are manufactured to include everything they need, including grit. BadGardener
Surely if lentils were cheaper than chickenfeed, the feed manufacturers would get there first and put the lentils into the feed? I am sure they work hard at working out what the cheapest way is to provide the appropriate nutrient balance.
