BuryFCA1
I have 7 girls and I worry I overfeed or underfeed them layers pellets. Can anyone help? The girls are not laying and I wonder if this may be the reason.
BadGardener
I thought they were meant to have free access to layers' pellets, which would mean you couldn't really overfeed or underfeed on it as long as you keep the feeders topped up. It's corn and s"Ooops, word censored!"s which seems to be more of a problem in making them fat. I've heard that the average is about 130-150g a day but it will vary according to size of bird, whether they're in lay, whether they're free ranging and finding a lot of their own calories by foraging. Mine aren't eating anything like that amount but they're small, not laying much and it must be peak foraging season. Do they seem fat? I think there's a way to tell if a chicken is fatter than it should be; someone more knowledgeable than me might know
merlina
Mine eat about a galley cupful of pellets each per day at most - usually just a little less. (no idea what that weighs!). They lay very well, pretty consistently an egg each a day for the past 14 months Obviously, if I feed them other stuff they choose to eat slightly less pellets. Did they ever lay? If so - Have you wormed them? The only time mine didn't lay well was when they needed worming (or at least that's what I did and the problem was solved!) Simondegaris
I have my Grub out all the time (well I bring it in at night) full of pellets for them to help themselves. I have also found that mine much prefer mash, so I use a crumb and add water etc to make a nice mash, they enjoy eating that, and when they have finished if still hungry they head for the pellets! They should have free access to food all day, they will only eat as much as they want!
