Student Insurance

Recommended Posts

Has anyone taken out student insurance? I know that halls are covered to a degree but I am just wondering whether is is worth getting cover for things like theft & loss (outside Halls) and accidental damage in and outside Halls. ES may well be travelling to and from places on the tube with ipad and mobile phone plus the room contents (including desktop) are pretty much only covered for theft and not accidental damage

I always used to take out my own insurance as a student. It wasn't very expensive (though in those days we didn't all have high-tec gadgets or laptops etc). However you insure, please check the small print. Some policies only insure belongings that are in bedrooms that have individual locks or won't include shared areas. Others tried to back out of claims for damage or loss due to third party if they were invited into a house OR if you couldn't prove that other housemates hadn't given them permission to access. Saying that, there were some good policies available too.

Thanks CatieB, I had seen that company, they seem to specialise in student insurance. I think I might get a quote. I think that I am most concerned about losses or theft on the Tube etc. I might do it for the 1st year and then take stock. I will contact my existing insurance company first to see if he is covered but I can't imagine that he is as he wont be living at home :?

Are you sure their stuff in halls are covered?

Most (well our halls) doesn't cover any personal stuff at all

There's also the (very common) problem of thefts by other students (depending what the halls set up is) and many insurances won't cover where there's no forced entry etc. I would recommend the endsleigh packages as they're designed especially for student set-ups

I have just got him insured with Endsleigh, I thought it was worth it for the first year at least. The Halls insurance is pretty basic and really only covers things if there is a forced entry, fire or flood. So, I have covered ipod, ipad, watch which was 18th birthday present, any gadgets but decided not to cover his mobile. I have also included loss of key/swipe card (can loose it 3 times per year!). All items covered inside and outside flat, overseas (30 days) and includes accidental damage (including water), theft and loss. Cost £66.40 for the year. I didn't think that was too awful. Excess £50 except the key thing which is free. It is worth it for me as it will hopefully avoid the "oh for goodness sake!" phone call
