lillybettybabs
Well as a avid online shopper i always use my credit card, I had a call for my banks fraud department to ask about a few out of habit spending's on my account. Being suspicious i said i would call the number on the back of my card on my mobile and get them to transfer me (to make sure it wasn't a scam). Well the customer service team would not transfer me because the details i gave were incorrect (because the fraudster had changed them) :roll:they had also changed the address to one in London and requested a new card. Anyway i had to risk calling the original number back, take everyone's names and be transferred to the fraud office.I pretend not to know my password and a few other things just in case but it turns out that it was genuine and they have stopped the card, taken the payments off, put a fraud alert on it and sending me a new one. So never ever use you debit card online, crooks can hack into very secure websites and get your information, you are covered with credit cards! I have spoken to the company that i had ordered from but they don't seem interested.
Chucky Mama
You can get your money back with debit cards too. We have had cards cloned twice and it was very easy to get the money back. Details are not always stolen online either, I never let my card out of my sight now as am pretty sure that one of ours was cloned when taken off us in a cafe. I notice that a lot of companies online that should use the Verified by Visa security check have disabled it which seems rather silly It is not foolproof and some people don't like it but it is an added security measure. The Dogmother
I agree with CM; I've had my credit card cloned before, luckily my bank was onto it.. they'd spotted that a £4,000 spend in a restaurant in Bethnal Green was out of character - I told them you could BUY a restaurant there for that! I always pay by PayPal if the option is available, just one extra layer of security.
lillybettybabs
I think it was a online job as i don't use my credit card anywhere else; I have known banks not to pay back on debit card so i will never take the risk tbh. I am cross that these people have managed to transfer some money and get a new tv from Argos.... grrrr!
SarahJo
This happened to me last year after I had surgery. The hackers use keystrokes info from your purchases and have an email address already. basically they randomly use the most frequently used "keys" in purchases till they match your security numbers etc My money was used to buy travel vouchers - basically cash for cash - they then tried to get £3000 more, which was obviously not in my account. They changed all my passwords and address to their own Faff - but the bank were very good and all money was refunded, I had to fill out an incident form though
Chucky Mama
When our debit card got cloned they also used our details to apply for a credit card and have it sent to their address We used http://www.creditexpert.co.uk/ (I think) to check for anything untoward. It was worth it.
Chicken shack
I used a well known Pizza --t and two emlyees wrote down my details including the 3 didgets on the reverse. The problem was I had purchased a washing machine the day before and they phoned me to check it was me. A few days later I recieved a letter from them asking me to phone re-fraud but if I had spoken to them to ignore the letter. Of course I had spoken to them and didn't bother to ring. When I got my statement they had racked up over £4000. It took six months to sort it out and I was lucky because I used to pay my credit card off by direct debit and I would not have had the funds to do so. They caught the two and they got a prison sentance. This entailed me spending time at the police station writing statments and being on call incase I was called as a witness. I now never pay for a take away over the phone how ever hungry I am. We work hard for our money what right do these people think they have. It was all very stressfull and upsetting. I now have all sort of alerts on my phone and email.

Hayleybug
this is where the use of a debit card instead of a credit card shouldnt be penalised by you not being able to claim back your money or get compensation- ive never had a credit card because i dont want to borrow money except for my mortgage. (my mum told me that i would be much better off if i promised to never get a credit card when i left home!), i know there are advantages to booking things on credit card such as holidays in case the company goes bust, but why should i sign up for credit just to have that backup? why is the bank not interested in looking after my money properly, and only concerned when its their money that im using?? Willow
why is the bank not interested in looking after my money properly, and only concerned when its their money that im using?? Absolutely agree Hayley, we have credit cards but I just don't like the idea of credit. I'd rather any money I spend came straight out of my account when I buy something so I really don't get why I have less protection On a related note whenever I can I try to ensure I pay for petrol with cash. the petrol stations locally have been a source of cloned card info, I don't know how general a problem that is. C&T
If your Debit card is branded with Visa or MasterCard, then you are fine. It is these card schemes that give you the protection. Using PayPay can help (you should see the size of their Fraud department - I visit their offices as a large customer fairly regularly). But they also suffer from their fair share of fraud, so don't get too carried away! But make sure that when buying online, that the payment pages are secure. So many aren't - and people still use them, and wonder why they are the victim of fraud. Also, try and only buy from companies you know, or at the very least are highly recomended. If you want to buy from an unknown company, at least google the company name to see if any horror stories come up, and check where the company is registered etc. And also never let your cards out of your sight. If the restaurant or whatever want to take it away, refuse. That is why they have the remote terminals! I've heard so many stories of people giving over their cards, the details being written down, and their accounts being cleaned out. That is easy to stop! Oh, and despite working in the industry?? My card has also been cloned... Sometimes there is nothing you can do but make sure you reconcile your bank statement each month!
Valkyrie
We kept getting computerised messages on the phone for DD to call a certain number because of a discrepancy on her account. Having been warned so many times not to respond to such calls we ignored it or as soon as the automated voice is heard we hang up. Then she couldn't use her card for petrol. So when she got home she rang the Halifax who then said we tried to contact you. OH gave them a bit of a hard time I have to say. Since then if there are any problems they ring her personally. Latest was someone bought a brand of watch in Scotland and was it her. Her answer was no way - that is so untrendy she wouldn't be seen dead in one of those! I have to say she's had to change her card about 3 times now, although one of those was a mess up by the Halifax. We have one credit card for using over the internet so that if anything does happen we can still buy food and petrol! OH had a habit of using our personal card for buying work things - like mobile phones and such for employees. Every time he did that our card was blocked. In the end I was so fed up being so embarrassed because he bought yet another mobile related thing that I told him to get a company card instead or he would be doing the shopping in future. The dragon has spoken and I still do the shopping!
