New eglu owner - few questions?

Recommended Posts

Received my eglu today and I love it!! Wish I'd done it years ago!! I've just put my 3 girls to bed and there seems to be loads of room in there. I have a buff orpington and a buff sussex (both 24 weeks) and a blue orpington (12 weeks). I dont think I'd put anymore than that in there though.

When I put it together earlier I looked through the door to the back and there was a gap along the back where the tray goes in. Is this right or have I done something wrong? Will there be a cold draught on them from this gap?

Are you meant to be sawdust or megazorb or newspaper in the tray to absorb their waste?

Hi, I just noticed your post and see no one has replied yet. I hope you are getting along ok with your new girls. In answer to your question, I use newspaper in the tray as it is easier to keep it clean that way but I know other people use wood shavings or aubiose. I also drape a towel over the back of the eglu when it gets really cold to stop the draft where the poor tray slots in but that is just me being a fuss pot, I am sure they would be ok without it.

Hello! I just saw this post and thought I would chip in too! I use a layer of shavings in the poo tray with bokashi bran and bio dry sprinkled lightly on - I find this dries the poo and stops the ammonia smell my little ones seemed to create. Sometimes I pick the poo out mid week if there's a lot but usually just replace each week. Just tip all out and nothing sticks if you make sure no green (or whatever colour) shines through. I have 4 girls in my cube (oldest now 22 weeks but was 12 when I got) - was worried about gap but as it isn't in the way if the wind have left and all seems fine - they move corners depending on weather anyway! That said I am debating cover for Scottish winter! Hope you are enjoying your girls and cube!

Newspaper user here too. I change it every second day as the girls are quite prolific producers. I add it straight into my compost bin - waiting to see in the spring if the quality of the compost has improved as it's our first yer with the girls. Enjoy your new arrivals. I just love mine and am sorry I didn't get them years ago!
