charly1979
So a while back I had my heart set on adding some bantums to my clan ... (hubby still unaware) Anyway I really wanted to get some pekin chicks and a silkie chick. I went to a place today that is closing for the winter didnt realise that but after talking to her I have some questions that I hope someone can help me with please. 1) Are bantum chicks difficult to sex ? After having got myself a boy recently by mistake I dont want to repeat this... 2) Can anyone recommend a place loacal to Bath (or possibly Honiton will be there in half term) that would have pekins and silkies (either POL or chicks depening on the answer to 1 ) Thanks in advance ..... really really want to get these birds I have names ready and waiting (Trixie, Iris and Gladys)
zakjon-98
Pekins are easy to sex but silkies can be difficult. What age are you thinking of getting them?
Purplemaniacs
I knew the sex of my pekin hatchlings quite early on but not the silkies, my latest hatchlings are 9 weeks old I am waiting to see if they are boy or girl silkies, I have my suspicions that at least one of the three is a boy but I would not put any money on it. CheekyPekins
I got my 2 Pekins in Taunton - near(ish) to the A303, if you're going from Bath to Honiton?
Redwing
Pekins are easy to sex but Silkies far harder A really good Silkie breeder will be able to tell earlier than someone who is a collective breeder. Personally I don't make any guesses before 16 weeks with silkies
charly1979
Cheeky Pekins We travel down on the A303 where abouts do you get yours from would be great to know .... mind you how do I get hubby to stop and then let me buy them ??? Suppose Im going to have to be very nuce to him Zakjon I was hoping to get young chicks thought it would be lovely for my 3 kids (oh ok and me) and a safer option re sexing than hatching our own (Id love to do this but the whole boy issue makes it impossible untill they invent sexable eggs, I suppose the day that happens is the day that chickens date stamp their own eggs ) Anyway as it seems that Silkies arent easy to sex early then im going to have to look at older ones
CheekyPekins
I got my Pekins (and a bantam Orp) from a fab lady called Tracy in Higher Comeytrowe in Taunton. She was incredibly helpful (these are my first hens), very knowledgable and my hens are fab! If you're interested, I'll dig out her number for you? CheekyPekins
PM'd you the number - sorry you've had a horrid week.... He might not notice the bantams in the run, but he might notice them in the car on the way up the A303?
FatJasper
Our friends in Bath got their pekins and silkies from Annie Hall's but I guess that might be the place which is closed for winter?
charly1979
Yes Annie Halls is closed for the winter, when I went up they didnt have anything in stock which is a shame as I got Connie (my gold line) from them and shes such a character (allways eyeing up my feet when im in my flip flops little madam) Mentioned my desire to have bantums to the hubby he wasnt that amused but im sure I can work on him
