missusmac
I've read a couple of sad posts about people losing chickens today so hesitated to share my excitement but then thought it might help to remind us why we risk fox attacks and chicken ill health. First bit of excitement for me was that my girls had their first FR today ever . I've been scared to do this as I've said on a previous post, but decided to be brave today as I had time to be out with them. It amazed me how they stayed so close to the eglu despite having the whole garden available. I loved the way they followed me around too and they made me laugh with their attempts to all dust bath in the same space despite room for them all to have their own And the time spent rattling corn in a metal bowl (a great tip from this forum ) when I feed them each day really paid off. They all followed me to the summer house where corn is kept and it was easy getting them back into the run I took loads of photos and will post some when I have time - off for a New Year meal soon with the family who all laughed at me today Second bit of excitement is that I've finally gone and ordered a WIR . Slightly scared by the cost but know it will be worth it to keep my girls safe when I can't be out there with them. Omlet WIR being delivered on Friday - I can't wait to be able to spend time with them in there . Now just need to get the garden ready and sweet talk OH into helping me Edited January 1, 2013 by Guest
mimi5
Well that is good news!!!! I'm sure it's money well spent, Omlet products do what they say on the tin!! Letting your chickens free range is a bit scary first time...but they love it!!! I bought myself another garden bench this summer so I could sit up on the lawn with them Maybe next year they come sit with me!! Enjoy your chickens!!! Mine give me hours of fun!Today as the sun was actually out the girls were free ranging and when 2 of my hatchlings (7 months old now, but still my babies ) Martha and Florence see me holding the meal worms bag, oh my goodness the mug me for them!!!! Love watching their antics
christyrose12
Yes it is lovely watching them free range. I have been out gardening today and they have been pottering round the garden all day with me. Though they wont come anywhere near me. I've had them for 2 months now and they are still wary of me. Dont know why
mimi5
Yes my originals are still a bit wary, even though I had them from being growers (15 months now). But 2 of my "babies" are very friendly but the other 3 aren't will have to keep working on that.......bribery and corruption aka mealworms It's their individual characters, well with pekins anyway, some are right grumpy madams!!!
