Twiglet
At last, I got my cube today, 8.00 this morning, got it put up in the dry, since then it has been thundering/bright all day. When I tried my shower curtain rain cover on it that previously covered the eglu run, it's not a very satisfactory fit. I feel that the cube could do with the sides & front (up to a point) being covered to keep out heavy rain and a standard shower curtain is the wrong shape. Any one else with a cube got theirs covered and if so, what with and how? I'd be grateful for any ideas thanks.
xChicken04x
yay! i bet your happy! i havent got my cube yet so i cant see your problem, how about getting some pond liner that way you can get it cut to shape.
hasnett
we went to see blackrock's cube and he had a sheet of bendy plastic that i think he said he got from a Diy store...
Twiglet
Thanks for that, chooks are just getting used to new cube, they've also got 2 new friends I'm going to have to introduce in the next few days as well. I fear that pond liner will be too dark as I would prefer a see-through cover.
craftyhunnypie
You've just beat me to this question! I've not got my cube yet, but having been giving some thought to this. As the back underneath the house bit is going to need some cover too. Hmmm I also use a shower curtain on the eglu mk2. Would 2 shower curtains not do it. Cut one dwn the length and use along each side & maybe a bit round the back if it reaches, then drape the other over the top? At the moment, I've also got a man made skirt on the run of my mk2 to stop them flinging their bedding material out! It's only an old greenhouse cover cut up into 2 long strips & cable tied on, but it does the job brilliantly. ooo maybe a greenhouse cover would work for the cube? Or hows about one of those patio table clear covers you can buy and snip it to fit the cube. I did think about cutting up a cheap tent, but they are so dark too. I'd want clear. I'll get my hubby - Proffesor Potts the inventor on the job - he's too clever for his own good! I did think about buying a cheap gazebo and placing it over the cube too, but it would have to have sides in - you can get sides with windows tho. It's just no good..... we shall all have to build little bus shelters for our hens!!!!! Emma.x
Twiglet
What's a greenhouse cover? Thought they were waterproof anyway *visions of ENORMOUS sheet of plastic blowing in the wind........*
Sue and the Spice Girls
I've not felt the need to give my girls a rain cover, they seem to go under the cube, or inside. PS How did you get the cube in your signature?
Twiglet
I sent out an sos to a moderator who uploaded one for me but I can't remeber who it was - may have been Kate.
craftyhunnypie
A greenhouse cover is the plastic pvc stuff that is the actual greenhouse, it goes over the frame. You know the sort of cheap greenhouses you can buy? Well that is what I cut up as the framework went rusty and fell apart with the gale force winds last year! I think Omlet are inventing some sort of rain cover at the moment anyway!!!! Emma.x
Gallina
Omlet suggest that you just buy a second shade like the shade that comes with the cube: you can see details here. There is supposed to be something better coming "soon", but Omlet are so busy that I expect it will be later rather than sooner. I have a sheet of plastic over my Cube at the moment which I throw back when it gets hot, but it isn't ideal. I prefer keeping my hens dry: they may not mind getting wet, but it doesn't mean it is good for them.
The Dogmother
Great to hear that it has arrived Sarah - has Steve been fiddling with it all day? Could you cut a shower curatin to the right shape/ measurements. I have used eyelets from millets (10 for £2.99) and some spare Omlet shade bungees (can get similar from B&Q) to secure mine to the eglu run; I'm sure you can do something similar with the cube. Let me know how you get on.... CX
Couperman
A shower curtain is as good as anything, It takes away a bit of the style of a Cube, plus the the roof of the Cube don't slide so well, but the chooks are dry and happy. If this is summer roll on Autumn. The leaves are falling already! Kev.
Twiglet
OK - This is what I've decided to do - I went out & got another shower curtain today although I couldn't get another clear one so it's a fetching blue mosaic pattern and have just started to cut a "made to measure" version except rain has stopped play now. I intend to keep the green omlet one underneath to act as a sun???? shade as it can get qute warm underneath the plastic. as long as the roof can still slide over it all. (haven't tested that bit yet) I have used some bungees from off an old omlet summer shade I don't use any more together with some "Softie" plant ties cut to size and also have found some small bulldog clips that might come into use as well. Claret - Steve's not managed to have a play yet as we've got a bit of a crisis at work at the moment and also his mum's just been taken very ill so he's got his hands full (it always comes at once doesn't it?) As an aside - you know that soft rubber tie stuff I mentioned on Sunday and above, it's by a company called Haxnicks and called softie, I got mine at our local garden centre. I have used it to secure all sorts of things. So, sun's back out now, crack on with the Heath Robinson rain cover. The things we do for our chooks!!! Guest
This is probably not the sort of answer anyone is looking for but I think omlet should "cough up" and provide everyone with a roof and colour match it with the colour of their ordered eglu cube! This would be much more stylish, dryer for the chickens and it makes a better selling point for the cube... The roof should be a standard part of any chicken coop and owners should not be expected to fork out hundreds of pounds for a posh house and stick a couple of £2.99 shower curtains on the top! Aunty e
I let mine get wet I'm afraid. The ones who are really bothered sit in the door of the cube or under it, but the rest of them happily pootle about in the wet. they do have a manky old blanket over the cube in the morning though as the increased ventilation = increased light in the cube = increased noise in the morning

Good idea, I think Thank you! I just think that a company should listen to it's customers and continually strive to improve their products based on the feedback they recieve. There have been issues with no roof since Mk1 of the eglu, where people have been trying to add a make-shift roof to protect their chooks from the elements. Customers shouldn't have to add their own roofs with shower curtains and blankets - this just tells me that the product has a defect which should be corrected. It's looks like I may have to open up a similar company to rasie a bit of healthy competition! Then you will get more for your money... Gallina
I would have thought there was scope for someone on this list who would like to make a bit of money to invest in some translucent tent material and hooks and run up some decent run covers to sell to us. Just don't ask people what colours they want: say they can have any colour they like, as long as it is green. (That will frighten Omlet into getting their run covers sorted: they do know that there is a problem with the old ones and intend to bring out something better.) Jaime
One of the 79p shower curtains from Tesco and the bungees off the original Omlet cover. Seems more than adequate and very cheap. Next Time I hope to find one that blends a little better! The glow is because there was a finger smudge on the lense - it doesnt realy glow! Gallina
That cover looks very professional. I don't think it would let as much heat through as plastic, either. Shall I continue to suffer from planning blight and wait patiently to see what Omlet produce, or make something myself? I expect others are in the same boat. At the moment laziness is prevailing, so I leaving on my tatty plastic. Did I mention anywhere that I was also waiting for the new Omlet drinker, I wonder? This has become real, but still I don't have one.
The Dogmother
That looks fab Jaime Personally, I'd make one myself - all my eglus have shower curtain covers. I think they're having some 'issues' with the new drinkers Gallina.
