When Should I get my first egg?

Recommended Posts

My chicks are now 17 weeks old I have been mixing a bit of layers pellets with there growers pellets, but what age do they normally start laying, I understand from the Omlet brochure that they supply point of lays which are 18-20 weeks old. Reading the forum some people seem to get eggs the day after the chickens arrive. So I was wondering when to put my china egg in the eglu! I do ask the girls every day "when are you going to lay me an egg"!! :?:

Hi Mrs T. It does seem to be about 20 weeks that they start laying, although individual birds vary. Signs of pending laying are more reliable I think than age - ie comb and face becoming redder; chickens become more friendly; 'squatting' when approached.

Hope it's soon for you - that wait for the first egg is almost as bad as the wait for the eglu to arrive!

Our chooks arrived on the 19th they where all 17 weeks and so far Ugly Betty is the only one to have laid 3 eggs after 2 weeks of having her so yours should be coming

pretty soon.

From reading on the forum quite a few people say that when they start doing (as my daughter says) eggy poos then they are getting ready to lay.
