Our first hen-iversary, and our thanks :-)

Recommended Posts

It's exactly a year today since we drove home along the M4 with our two chooks rustling about in a cardboard box, and what a delight it has been :D

I can't imagine gardening without their assistance and their gentle chat, or being without their gorgeous big fresh eggs.

We've learned loads...chickens are far from 'chicken', ours are bold and inquisitive and certainly have got the better of our fierce bad ginger cat. The terrible noise meant 'someone has laid an egg!' not 'we are being murdered!' That starting hen-keeping at the beginning of an all-time record wet summer and then a bitter winter was a challenge at times. That getting antibiotic drops into a sick hen was no fun at all, and it took her some time to forgive me and be my friend again.

Then there has been the chooks' supper - originally a warm 'little something' for them to go to bed on, now a daily ritual of a little mashed spud, or a spoonful of rice or a bit of veg. Who knew mine would decide that carrot in any way, shape or form is not fit to pass their beaks, but that a swig of coffee or tea from an unguarded mug is delicious

Our thanks and our love to everyone on this wonderful forum, you have been unfailingly nice, helpful and reassuring, here's to the summer

Great to read all your triumphs, trials and tribulations. I think we've all been though a similar experience and feel so much better for it.

Mind you, I am surprised you still only have two chooks, usually by now happy chicken owners can expect to have contracted "morehens disease", for which there is no known cure . We caught it a really badly, going from two to ten chickens in less than three years, built a big WIR to house them all and have raised chicks several times as well.
