Just ordered a bumpa bit :o(

Recommended Posts

For a while now I've noticed that some of the feathers on the backs of my chucks (and around their bums) have looked like they've been breaking, leaving them with just white fluff instead of proper feathers. I've been assuming their diet was somehow lacking  but over the last couple of days I have noticed one chuck (Giblet  ) sort of "grazing" on the feathers of the others - she doesn't seem aggressive when she's doing it (she generally does it when the others are at the grub or glug), but this would appear to the be cause of the broken feathers (especially as Giblet herself is not affected by the problem).

So, with some reluctance, I've ordered a bumper bit - do you think that will solve the problem?

I had bumpas on all mine, none of which worked. Pixie was almost bald on her bum and the skin was looking red. I took advice from elsewhere and parked a piece of duct tape over the feathers she had left, taking care not to stick it on the bare skin. I also squirted the skin with Genetian Violet. That worked :D I slathered Vaseline on the remaining feathers so the other girls dont get a good grip on what's left, that has also worked, even after the amount of dust bathing that went on in order to get rid of the slimyness  .

Diluted milk will help with baldyness, the calcium helps to grow new feathers, not too often though as chickens have trouble digesting lactose, the sugars found in milk.
