Blinking chickens keep roosting ON their house!

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there is an easy way to fix this problem but I can't figure it out...

My lovely OH has built my girls a raised coop so that they could have a sheltered area beneath for them, their food and water etc. The girls think it's great because now, they can jump on top of it and see into next doors garden! They've also taken to roosting on top of their new house so each night, I have to pop them all inside onto the perch and shut the door on them. They're still laying in their old house which is still inside the WIR.

1) Should I remove the old house straight away to encourage them to lay in the new one?

2) How can I teach them to roost inside their new house so that I don't have to disturb them every night?

Someone I know suggested leaving them shut inside the house for 2 full nights and the day inbetween and popping their food and water in with them, but if I do this, they wont have any light for a whole day and seems a bit mean to me...

Thoughts?!

Not advice as such but one of my newish speckledys likes to sleep outside in the trees. As it's summertime will leave her to it. Last weekend, saw out the window she had decided my new garden table with parasol was a good spot and nestled down inbetween two solar lanterns and a pink geranium for the night!! Darn that I didn't take a pic!! :)

Thanks for the reply, I wish i felt happier leaving them out but since my last 3 were taken by Mr Fox, I daren't risk it anymore, despite our best efforts to completely fox proof the WIR, I'm not taking any risks as I still hear young foxes at night!!

For the mean time i guess it's just a case of keep putting them inside until they get the hint?!
