Loft Insulation - another DIY ques

Recommended Posts

My loft has horrible dirty very old fibreglass insulation and not enough of it. The headroom in the loft is not great so I'm not keen to just roll new on top for the area we use for storage. I was thinking of removing the old  and replacing with space blanket covered by loft insulation boards so I can continue to store things in the loft. I'm starting to sort through what I have up there to eliminate stuff I really don't need to keep but I'll still have lots of Christmas decs and other bits and pieces.

Does anyone know can you walk on the loft insulation boards ? Has anyone removed old loft insulation ?

insulation board is only foam basically and want take any weight i.e. walking on it. as for removing old loft insulation bare in mind that there every chance it fibre glass which is a major irritant so you need to wear a boiler suit gloves, face mask and goggles that are dust rated which will result in you getting very hot especially this time of year and you'll more that likely still end up itching from the fibre glass. right that's the down side it's fairly easy to remove and replace just made sure you have enough good strong bin bags to put the old stuff in as you want get that much in each bag. you will have to cut the boards to fit it's cheaper to use the 8x4 boards you'll also need to get them through the loft hatch so you'll need to check the head room to make sure that an 8ft length will go through to be honest it'll take a lot longer than using the rock wool type of insulation which is about half a days work to lay not including the removal of the old stuff.

one other point don't do it when the sun is out the roof space gets really hot I did mine in the spring time about 20+ years ago even through it was cold out the loft was like an oven by the time I was half way through I started the job all suited up ended up just a tee shirt and jeans and itched like mad for the best part of a week after

What DM said.

We (that's the Royal we) did it when we cleared out the loft for a loft conversion. Took eight consecutive weekends to remove 110 years worth of bits of old slates, straw, polystyrene chippings, fibreglass, birds nests, etc. Filled the wheelie bin each weekend to the brim. Despite wearing masks, overalls, the dust got into every crevice and pore. Had to boil wash all his hankies...

Just got it finished and OH managed to slip and put his feet through the bedroom ceiling, either side of a joist. Good job we weren't planning any more kids...

I have a man trapped in my loft - he's been in there for two weeks - hoovering out nearly 100 years of dirt and replacing the insulation. I bought 21 of the huge rolls of insulation - we are down to three on the landing. Need to by some new pipe insulation to replace that chewed by mice. .....nearly there! (I do let him go home at night).

I've also been there and done that!

I took out old insulation a bin bag at a time, it was thick and heavy with 100 years of muck and bits of slate after I had a new roof. I also vacuumed all the dust up. Had to wear a zip up white paper type overall from a pound shop, and mask and goggles. I did not replace the insulation but boarded the loft with tongue and groove which is screwed down. Obviously it cannot be used for regular use (joists not deep enough) but is perfect for storage and as a craft area if needs be. Old carpets from the house have been laid over the tongue and groove and the upstairs of my house appears warmer.

Good luck!
