Not in the job description?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure most of us here end up doing things that are 'not in the job description' and lots of your examples are probably better than mine!

For my job, I work with stroke patients supporting them with their speech and language rehab. However, this week I've been asked to demonstrate how to cook scrambled eggs (well who better to ask than a chicken keeper  ) and been asked to go shopping with a patient who said he needed some fashion advice

So, what do you do that's not in the job description?

I am on the checkouts at Waitrose.

I have been asked how to get rid of head lice, what a Squash is in Spanish, what is on 'tonight at 9' at The Henley Festival (they were astounded that I didn't know the entire line-up!).

I have also had a woman show me her false teeth (that was this week), had lurid & graphic descriptions of injuries & operations thrown at me, been told to personally complain to head office on behalf of a customer who doesn't like Pippa Middleton & who took objection to her being in our magazine & have had to fend off over enthusiastic fans from TV, movie & rock stars.

I love my job - all human life comes through my till

Hmmmm.... niiiice!

I manage the Estate Office of a 1,000 acre private estate, which is farmed; my role is multi-faceted anyway and involves anything from purchasing and book-keeping through to keeping livestock and arable records. It can also entail rounding up escaped young pigs, supervising hatching eggs in an incubator, bottle feeding a fawn, and I have 3 ducklings at home this coming week as both the stockman/gamekeeper and I are on leave and no-one else will look after them.

It is lovely in the warmer months, but can be VERY cold in the winter, but I do get to drive an assortment of Landrovers and big trucks :D Certain people can be hard work though and it isn't a job for the faint-hearted as it's an all male staff, so the humour/behaviour is very barrack room.

Ah yes, this reminds me of a phone call I received a few months ago.

"Hello, I wonder if you can help me. My dad is currently in the stroke ward at the hospital but he's not got his false teeth in. Can you tell me why he's not got his teeth in? I don't want to bother the nurses by asking them".

Er.... Not really! I work for a charity, not the hospital. I'm not a nurse. Neither am I psychic! I can't tell from this distance why your dad doesn't have his teeth in. I suggest you ask a nurse  (My reply was politer than that, don't worry!)
