Lewis
I've been tasked with finding some cheap and easy plants (preferably something fun or veg) to grow from seed in August or September and wondered if anyone had any ideas? Is for an open day so something easy we can do in small pots that they can take away would be great! Ideally we'd have done something fun like sunflowers or pumpkins but know its the wrong time of year for those. Thanks
stu
The only thing I can think of that you can plant late and that grow fast would be salad leaves? You can get mixed leaves. Beans are okay to plant any time too, in the sense that they will easily grow, and are a bit more interesting than salad.
bluekarin
From a quick google I have found you can plant chard which comes in beautiful colours, chervil and spinach. I would also do cut and come again lettuce, and maybe try pea shots. If you want things for the kids to grow on when they get home, you could do broad beans as they are much better started off now. Look forward to seeing what you do
sjp
any of the cut and come again salad leaves will grow quick or cress that'll germinate in a few days plus you only need a bit of kitchen roll and a small pot of some description a clear plastic drinking cup will do We normally have folk from Salop Drive at the Sandwell Show and they use ready grow plug plants and get the kids to make paper pots them plant up the plug plant in that as it's an instant pot plant they use salad leaves and herbs
chickencam
Herbs that can then be grown on indoors, the quickest to germinate is basil and basil seeds usually come in large numbers in packets.
craftyhunnypie
I'd do hairy heads using some old tights, wiggle eyes & some grass seed! I also was going to say cress in egg shells. Or how about some Winter Pansies? Emma.x

soapdragon
I have just planted up the last of the French bean seeds on a sunny windowsill - did the same this time last year and we were picking and eating well into October! They look a bit leggy but seem to do alright - I put them outside on warm days and also when its raining!
