Our market chicks

Recommended Posts

Sold to me as leghorn babies- they are adoptive siblings for the sole Legbar that hatched at the weekend.

All getting on well, the broody seems to have accepted them.

Not all that important what we end up with- cockerels will either get eaten or go back to market :)

Didn't think that was too bad for £5.50.

Very cute :D

Well done for being responsible with cockerels from the start - I'd much rather dual purpose birds were raised for meat than go to waste

Thanks Lewis- I am excited about having our own meat- the fact that they will be quite light doesn't bother me- they have to be meatier than quails (which I also keep) right?

I like the fact that they will have a life with us and then will be enjoyed by us :)

I'd love to keep quail. Do you have a separate run for them? Had 3 a couple of years back. Blooming fox killed them all. They were in an enclosed run, but the fox managed to bend it all out of shape and lift it out of the ground :(

Yes- the quail are in a classic with 2m run with the roosting bars removed, with lawn edging attached around the bottom of the run a la small bird kit so they can't be snatched out if they lean against the side.

Never had a problem with the fox, even though we have 2 living at the bottom of the garden in the wood.

I keep them for eggs primarily, but plan to hatch from them in the spring and add in new blood via the incy for eating :)
