2009 Omlet cube and run for sale

Just wanted to know what other omleteers do, I usually take the cube lid off, take all the removable bits out and hose everything down then use poultry shield, yesterday I couldn't do this due to the torrential rain and am unable to do it during the week due to work, I emptied the littler trays and nest box, took out the roosting bars washed them both all down with hot soapy water, but didn't het time to use poultry shield and leave it for the required hour.

 

What do others do and have I done enough to keep the girls clean (I do clean the poo trays daily too)

In bad weather (and that means much of the winter tbh!) I do a weekly change of trays and nest material. That includes washing the area quickly with a hose if possible, but it isn't always. The thorough clean takes place whenever we have a patch of better weather, so maybe once a month.

Have you got spare roosting bars ?

That way you can spray them and leave them somewhere to dry ready to use next time and replacing them with the the ones sprayed from the week before.

Yes spare bars and spare poo trays are definitely the way to go and are a good investment. We have 3 sets of each and it really does make things easier, especially in the winter.

 

To be honest I worry less in the winter about Poultry Shielding stuff. In the really dark depths of winter the poo trays are often frozen on to the cube anyway so they just get a clean in situ (there was a period of about 5 weeks a few years back, when the snow came down and stayed down, where we couldn't get the things out to do a proper clean).

Gosh I don't do all that every week! I just clean out all the mucky stuff (newspaper, shavings etc) and replenish.

Hosing down and poultry-shielding the coop is done a couple of times a year.

Wow, now I feel really slovenly!

LOL don't feel slovenly:) I feel relieved, I have been doing the hose down and poultry shield weekly, maybe a tad OTT but at least I now know it's not desperate to do it every week x

I'll admit I've never succumbed to weekly scrubbing, but I did used to do it about once a month in the early days. You will soon settle into a routine that works for you

This is the bit I am positively dreading x 3!! I never gave it much thought when adding chicken after chicken! I have boots in my utility room and roll trouser legs up for the forage into what will be a quagmire soon. Seems one henhouse is a fav (the newest one and boy can the poop pile up in just a week below the roosting bars!) Now snow would be fine to walk in for me but the chooks may have other ideas. It's the rain and possibly heavy gales that scare me as is norm. We have had lovely weather for the last ten days but..............

I used to be really diligent but now I wash the cube and run perches when I change the run floor which is anything from 3 weeks to a couple of months. I do empty the poo trays most days though and poo pick the run daily. I look in the cube every day to check for redmite when counting the girls each night. None yet phew.

 

All those droppings I'm drowning in them just from 6 now if I multiply that by 5 You must have a very fertile garden

Fertile...ask me next year if I have any grass left???? What is there now is growing just fine, and toss some hen droppings around them...time will tell? 6 chooks scratched up a lot of grass last year.......ummm.....

Unfortunately I am unable to pop the poop on the garden as my two little griffon's find it irresistible and I can't face trying to remove the leftovers from their beards

 

What I do is pick up the poo daily and dispose of it in the dog poo bags then pop in in the poo bins when walking the boys or when on my way to work, I do this twice daily in the summer as I am terrified of maggots and we have had a lot of flies

we dont clean every week either - only when it needs doing - poo removal everyday and change of bedding etc at weekends

 

all our poo/bedding etc goes in the green wheelie bin - not sure its meant though

 

wanna get a composter next year though
