Is moulting miserable?

Recommended Posts

Ive had my 2 girls for over 2years now and it's the first time my bluebelle has moulted. The feathers are coming out in handfuls and the garden looks like a pillow fight has taken place. When my other girl has moulted she has always acted normally but Charlie seems to be a bit miserable about it. I can't put my finger on it but she's not quite herself. Mooching about, less enthusiastic and less friendly. Is this normal?

Yes it is :( It takes a lot out of them, growing new feathers, especially for girls with lots of them like your bluebelle.

Thats why some people up the protein levels by giving a few treats during the moult, or a tonic. Its not necessary but it can make us feel a bit better, and hopefully the girls as well :D

My bluebelle is moulting at the moment and she looks thoroughly fed up with the whole thing!

So does Marshmallow one of my Snowbelles, I have never seen her look in such a state. Although they lay lovely large 70g + eggs they are tiny birds compared to the other hybrids and without many feathers it just shows how small she is.
