nin-chicken
I have two more days left of 'flubenvet week' and I'm pretty sure my girls are not going to finish their pellets. I have four girls so weighed out 4kgs of feed to mix with the flubenvet. I've been really strict, kept the girls in their WIR for the week and haven't given them any other food at all (really REALLY difficult!). If there is leftover food should I continue with my strict routine until it's gone or is it ok to let the girls out on the grass and give them a few treats? I'm desperate to do both but will of course do whatever is best for my girls. Thanks in advance for any advice.
AlisonH
I tend to let mine out late afternoon for a bit before it gets dark. They have spent all day with the treated food and then have a bit of time out without filling themselves up too much out of the run.
nin-chicken
Thank you, I'll do that on Tuesday. So do they need to finish all the medicated pellets?
Purplemaniacs
After seven days you go back to feeding them their normal food. Chrissie
nin-chicken
And throw away the medicated ones? Will it still have been effective at worming them if they haven't eaten it all? I'm pretty certain they haven't got worms but want them to be protected. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my query!
Lavenders_Blue
Yes, if there is medicated feed left over after 7 days then throw it away. The idea is that the hens eat as much food as they require according to age/weight/size so there is no set amount of food that the hens should eat to get the full dose. Basically, as long as the hens have had access to nothing other than Flubenvet feed for 7 days, then they have had enough wormer, so you just chuck the leftovers. nin-chicken
Brilliant, thanks so much for clarifying. I can't wait to let them out on the grass tomorrow! Its been really hard being so strict. And Im sure the corn/mealworms will go down well at tea time too! Thanks again.
The Dogmother
Just a tip; next time you need to buy Flubenvet, get the pre-medicated pellets, then there's no mixing to do and any left overs can be kept until the next worming session. Except my bag expires before then - is there actually any harm going beyond the week to let them finish it off?
The Dogmother
Mine usually squeaks in for the next quarterly worming session. I wouldn't go over the 7 days recommended period though.
jimnpaula
My stuff expires end of December. Ah well, maybe the wild birds would like it Edit: unless anyone with 2-3 hens would like it? I expect 2-3 kgs will be left by the weekend.
The Dogmother
As it's a licensed product, I'm afraid that (kind thought though it is) you can't offer it to anyone else... Sorry
Purplemaniacs
When I ordered mine they did warn me that they only had a short date. Mine expire before I will need to worm again but I do agree the medicated pellets are so much easier. I had not used them until this session of worming. nin-chicken
I used the premixed stuff the first time I wormed them & shared a 10kg bag with a friend who keeps chickens. This time I mixed the flubenvet in myself and didn't find it too bad at all - I just mixed two scoops with a bit of olive oil then added this to the 4kg. I was very thorough and it mixed in easily. jimnpaula
I might go back to mixing it myself if I find I have a lot left over this time. I just thought I 'd give the pre-mix a go as I'd seen it in my local feed store. P
