Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

Hi all, I am a rubbish forumer and only ever post when I need help. I have done a little search and can't find my answer so here I am.

 

My ladies are doing really well (cuckoo maran bantams), 2 of them started laying last week and we have beautiful little brown eggs - I was so chuffed!!

 

I use aubiose in my eglu, we have an eglu classic and I like to line the nest box and poo tray with newspaper first so that it's easier to clean. I am finding though that the newspaper is gettinge very wet. I can't understand why. I have also noticed that when I pull the poo tray out that the grey base of the eglu is very wet too.

 

Should it be like this?

It could be condensation. I don't bother with newspaper but just use the aubiose.

I agree with Patricia, it sounds like condensation. I also line my poo tray with newspaper and at this time of year it is just as you describe. Chickens don't half get the temperature up in an Eglu overnight!

Just don't use it... newspaper (as does any paper) wicks dampness towards it. I just use Aubiose in the poo trays.

Me too, I used to put newspaper under it but I don't now, just aubiose.

Thank you! I have done that this week (aubiose only) and it is much improved. I've bought a cat litter scoop to poo pick daily and it's working really well.

You shouldn't need to poo pick daily though.

My 2 trays filled with aubiose last 3-4 days for 9 chickens at the moment and longer in the Summer when there is more daylight and more hours for the girls to be playing in the sunshine.
