Good Dilemma

Recommended Posts

I have been very lucky to get my hands on a second hand omlet WIR. It is the stand alone one and also came with an almost brand new classic (And an extraordinary amount of extras such as covers, feed, health tonics, treats, feed bins, bokashi..the list goes on........If you are reading this Maxine thank you very very much.). I already have a cube and am thinking of attaching the cube to the run. The dilemma I have is whether to sell the classic or get hold of a run and get some more ex batts. I can then integrate them when they are a bit stronger. I was going to get another couple of Hybrid girls in Feb to make up my numbers to 4 but would love some more ex batts.

What does everyone think I should do? I am only supposed to have a maximum of 4 birds (I promised my lovely and very patient OH no more than 4!) but could make it up to 5 with 3 ex batts and lots of eyelash fluttering and sad stories about all the poor ex batts.

I'd keep hold of the classic. Even if you don't get a run for it, you can put it on a table in the WIR and either have more hens in there, and/or let them use it as an extra next box. However with a run, it would make an excellent space for introductions for new ones. Even if you never have more than 4, you'll need to replace the existing ones from time to time.

As for your OH, I have to say, mine would never notice how many I had. And if he ever did, the old phrase, " OH, this old thing, had it ages.... " would always work, If he's not involved in the care of them, why should he care anyway? 5,6,7 - no more work than 4........

If I were you, I would definitely keep the classic and get a few more ex cage fighters....once you have had them and they are integrated with your currant girls you can keep it, as the others have said for emergency use.

I had a problem with some of my girl attacking one girl and ended up having to hire a Go, not ideal and wish I had a spare classic or go.

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to keep the classic as I have just heard back from omlet that I can attach both of the eglus to the WIR and can leave the door of the cube run on when I attach it. This will make intros so much easier as can just have newbies in the classic and WIR and keep the older ones in the cube until time to mix them. I will only need to get a classic connection kit as can attach the cube just as it is. Am now looking forward to some drier weather so I can get everything set up. All I need now is omlet to start making little doors in the side or back of the cube run so I can let the other hens out to FR.
