I'm reading "Tales from the Coop - the joy of ex-battery hens" Edited by Sphie McCoy and just love it!! It is truly heart warming and makes me feel I ought to dash out and get some ex-bats (well ex-cage these days). Do you have any good chick lit books to recommend that make fun reading (rather than the usual instruction books)? After a long dull day at work when my brain is too adled for serious books a bit of chick lit is just the medicine I need

I love that book! I bought it just after I got my ex-bats and it really hit home. I can't recommend it highly enough though whether you have ex-bats or not, the poem about the girls moaning to their keeper because they all want the same nest box is hysterical. Really lovely book - can't think of any others because that is my fav

me too:) loved the book, got it on my kindle and took it on holiday 3 weeks before getting my girls and couldn't get past the poem 'letters are amazing' coz I kept crying!!

There is a really funny book written by a chap during his first year or so of chicken keeping, its so true and witty and he writes beautifully - I cant for the life of me remember the title though

I've read 'One hundred ways for a chicken to train a human' jackian and you are right it is really funny.

 

Another very funny book is Martin Gurdon's "Doing Bird - A chicken keeper's year". He really is such a whitty writer. I laughed a lot when I was reading it and have now got his book "Travels with my Chicken" but haven't read that one yet. In "Doing Bird" he has doves and ducks as well as chooks so a bit like me I also enjoyed "Chicken Coops for the Soul - a henkeeper's story" by Julia Hollander which though not as funny, is heart warming.

This is one of my favourites too.

 

It sums up my Suzie by saying "The hurried clucking of a hen when laying an egg is distinctive. What you do every day is amazing; no human could even come close to what you achieve. Be proud and tell them before, during and after the activity - over and over again"

 

Not only does Suzie do this for her own egg but for all the other girl's eggs too

Well got one idea there re the battery hen book for something to get/read as sis gave me 'doing bird' for Christmas and loved it.. Any more good ones?

Not a book about hens, but hens feature in it: Hens Dancing by Rafaella Barker, and the sequel Summertime. They're a lighthearted rom-com type of book, in which hens play a sort of walk-on part!
