Hong Kong culls chickens over H7N9

Recommended Posts

As far as I remember, we were all instructed (not personally, just generally!) to keep our hens under cover, ie in their runs rather than free-ranging. I think this was to keep them away from wild birds who could be carrying something.

that's the currant advice as well I think, the run has to have a solid roof ,not an open to the elements type be it mesh or no roof

We had an outbreak of H5N1 within 10 miles from us a few years back, so we were on lock-down. No real problems, just kept them in the covered run until the all clear came through, and wasn't able to transport any chooks.

It is a good idea to have some form of bio-secure accommodation (a run with a clear tarp on it is fine) then if we had an outbreak and you were in a risk area, you'd be fine.

TBH, DEFRA don't really bother checking and it's down to the individual to keep themselves informed; a friend who lived on their farm inside the lock-down area neither heard from them, nor had a visit :?
