jackie45
Unfortunately all my four chickens were killed by a fox at the weekend. I intend to replace them at the beginning of April. My problem is that I have about half a bag of Garvo pellets left. I bought them just before Christmas and I wonder if anyone knows if they will be alright to give to the new girls, bearing in mind that the bag might still be in use by May. Many thanks Jackie
chickencam
They must have a best before date on them somewhere, we use Garvo and generally they have quite a long expiry, can't remember off hand where it is printed though.
Ain't Nobody Here
So sorry to hear about your girls, poor things . I'm sure the pellets will be OK.
jackie45
Forgot to add we emptied the pellets into the Feeder and put the bag in the bin without looking at the date. GettIng forgetful Jackie
Chickabee
That's just awful, you poor thing. Devastating . I sometimes buy more than one bag at a time of my favourite pellets. Never had a problem with them going out of date. I think as long as they are in a good quality container they should be fine.
The Dogmother
Most bags of pellets usually have a use by date of 3 months from purchase; if you use that as a guide, you ought to be OK.
sjp
the only problem is if they get damp then that will cause mould to grow on or around the pellets
gavclojak
I purchased some pellets two weeks ago and the sell by date is April 2014. On a seperate note, how did the fox get in? It's just I am sure we all learn something from these attacks and it may help someone else avoid said attack.
jackie45
The fox enlarged a small gap under a 6 foot wooden fence and got straight into the run. We are still in a state of shock, the garden is so quiet and lonely. Thanks for the replies, they have been useful. I shall put the feed in our basement this afternoon as it is dry and a constant temperature. Jackie
