Anyone used aluminium for WIR, experiences?

Recommended Posts

Been investigating the possibility of a new WIR and looked at aluminium ones made for parrots. I can get the right size meld mesh to be fox proof but wondered if anyone had used aluminium, if so any pros or cons?

I was thinking it won't rust or harbour mites and won't need treating like wood.

Based on my engineering experience it all depends on the grade (type) of Aluminium used Mollyripkim. There are many alloys and variations in hardness. But outside I have a trailer with a rear load ramp made of aluminium and of course a greenhouse frame. Both are in excellent condition and a greenhouse frame is testament to how strong it can be. Aluminium stretches when it is bent, so if the mesh gets twisted it won't go back to where it was. I can't see a problem with serviceability, but it isn't as anywhere near as strong as steel so the mesh will need to be about twice the gauge (thickness) of the zinc plated steel counterpart. I will add that I have experience of alloys from China and they were not controlled as well as UK manufactured product so they were consequently of inferior quality.

Mmm that's interesting thankyou, thinking of 14 guage mesh, have been offered either inch or half inch squares and am just waiting for a quote from a uk factory. Can't find another so be interested if you know one. You are absolutely right about the Chinese imports, they seem to be really poor quality

Trouble is found two different suppliers online but both don't have addresses in their website, nor telephone numbers. One did give me a mobile when pushed and the quote was good but just came in an email, no headed paper etc, maybe I am just cynical but worry about giving a big deposit and losing it.
