Blood smeared egg

Recommended Posts

A few days ago one of my girls laid a softie overnight or very early am, this morning there was an egg with half a shell, which I suspect the girls have started to eat, the egg had blood on the shell and a tiny spot of blood on the roosting bars.

All the girls seem fine, I have checked the vents and I couldn't see any blood on their knickers so am not sure who laid it. Should I be worried. They are two and a half year old ex-commercial girls and I am getting only a few eggs a week from them but I guess they are coming to the end of their laying lives which I'd fine by me, just want to make sure they are ok...ps love my ladies

I've seen this occasionally and other things but haven't worried too much if they are carrying on as normal. I figure that being a female of any species is unpredictable. Mine have had hiccups but are fine now and healthy as anything. They've had soft eggs, weird lumpy eggs, tiny eggs and are now back to laying regular perfect eggs-although not so many.

My chickens are weird little sweethearts.

Thanks beantree, I do check regularly as I am terrified of fly strike:( can't see anything but as a flock they are behaving weird at the moment. They are usually straight out of the cube in the morning, but for the last few days the two higher ranking girls have taken ages, up to half an hour to come out.i also found another broken, possibly eaten egg in the nest box!

They are getting on a bit so I think maybe this is them coming to the end laying

I have had eggs with blood on them and got quite worried in the past, but nothing untoward ever came of it.

Just one of those things.

Have also had eggs that had a lot of blood inside - ie the white was all bloody.

Again just a blip that didn't seem to mean anything

I think we see such sanitised eggs in shops it doesn't prepare us for the reality at all
