Hayleybug
Hi all not been on here for quite a while now but unfortunately Clementine has got me almost to the end of my tether! she has been a broody madam since she started laying, and only takes a break in the very cold winter. the rest of the time we may get a couple of days of eggs followed by weeks of broodiness and this has now escalated to her pecking little Peggy-Sue on the comb which only heals up while Clementine is in the anti broody cage. I have been recommended to fit a bumpa bit but there only seems to be one size available and im not sure if it will fit her? she is a Wyandotte bantie so fairly big. is anyone in the Cheshire area (near holmes chapel area) on here who might have experience with fitting and may be able to help me fit one if I reimbursed with tea/cake/fuel cost or brought her to you in a box? I'm scared of hurting her or not being able to get it on properly on my own (OH is scared of birds). this is step 1. also I was wondering whether it might help to get another chook or two to give Peggy-Sue a friend to talk to as she pines for Clem when she is in the broody coop but gets pecked for her affection. I would like to get another chook at least since Lola died last year, and it may be easier to do intros with Peggy-Sue as the passive one, and have Clem bumpa-bitted up for any newbies. any advice? failing all of this I will have to give up on her and try to rehome her I think, though I would hate to have to fail her as its not her fault shes daft as a brush. thanks for any thoughts! Egluntyne
Bumpa bits tend to be too big for bantams generally.
Hayleybug
Hi Egluntyne, i was told there was a smaller size for bantams? if not is there anything else that would fit a bantam? she is fairly big. ive seen the ones that are just rings but they look like they hold the beak open quite a bit more so dont look as kind if you see what i mean... maybe she needs to be somewhere in a bigger flock where she cant find one particular victim so easily... Patricia W
I've just seen this. Egluntyne is right, the bumpa bits available are much too big for bantams. Even the larger ones like my black and white Polands. I have an intermittent feather eater, and frankly, nothing has worked except increasing her free ranging time to divert her. So it seem for her, boredom is a factor. Hope you solve it, and if you do, let me know!
