Please do NOT read if easily offended!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am really sorry to bring this topic up as I know everyone here absolutely adores their pet chickens and would probably feel sick just at the thought...

…I love my chooks to, but I have some "spare" cockerels that I am raising for meat...

...Can anyone please give me step by step instructions on the easiest and most humane way to slaughter and prepare a chicken ready for roasting.

Once again my sincere apologies to anyone who may find this thread distressing/disturbing.

Thanks for your help everyone!

P.S. Answers can be pm'd to me if you think it is more appropriate or you could just send a link to a descriptive blog/website (preferably step by step, with pictures).

If you pm Lesley she will be able to tell you and also give you a link

And I am sure no one will be offended at all - this is the 'real' world we are living in after all.

yes i even thought about having some for meat and a couple of turkeys for christmas, i was too scared to ask if anyone had any for meat. i am sure it will not upset anyone.

one of our workmen used to do it at a previous job and told me about it, its the hanging up afterwards that i dont fancy. there is a chicken dispatcher on e-bay which keeps comming up when i do chicken searches.

There are specific sections on despatching on other poultry forums such as Practical Poultry, Poultry Keeper etc.

I was going to be so brave and cull my own boys if I had to but I've been really lucky and someone has taken them all - some will live with the girlies and some will be eaten eventually, but at least they're roaming the hills until that time.

I get mine from a friend who's adult son does that - so whilst I can get them from her I will.

If I had more land though I would definitely 'go for it'

To take responsibility for what we eat is a very good thing to do I think

I had a sneaky look too, just to be nosey!

Personly i wouldnt eat any animal that i had, or even if i saw a picture of the chicken i was eating for my roast dinner that would put me right off. If people prefer to eat their own animals then i have nothing against that, its just not for me iam afraid.

I have arranged with a local farmer to despatch any excess males I may have when the time comes. I know I couldnt do it myself but got this lined up before I even started hatching eggs as I knew I had to be realistic about too many males. Having said that I am struggling on one score. My first ever hacth was a failure and I got one chick. It's turned out to be male but he's my baby. The next batch are a mix but theres more of them and I'm not so attached. Still struggling with what to do with him, it doesnt help hes absolutely beautiful. (under the stairs maybe?). I would love the space and money to have two cubes. I would have pet chickens/for eggs and growers for eating. The first lot would be petted and named the second lot would just be cared for.

my hubby would be able to answer this question as he was a butcher for 18 years and then moved on to a job with live poultry on farms (where he has to humanely despatch of sick or injured birds on the poultry farms)

......but he is at the cinema watching The Simpsons movie !!:roll:

You'll usually find the despatch described in detail in both Practical Poultry and River Cottage.

We started off by being shown by a local man - much the best way if you can find someone to help. We then did our own for a while, it's not easy at first and even though it becomes easier, we never really got used to doing it.

Since moving to the farm, our neighbouring farmer has a plucking machine and takes any birds we have to be plucked. Now we just say "can you take those two" and he despatches them in seconds and takes them with him :? We get tham back later all plucked and dressed 8)

We're comfortable with knowing we can do it if necessary.

I see things different l would never kill an animal that l had cared for to me thats just bad sorry. There are enough animals that lose there lives with out adding to them.Me for one would never swap places with an animal if you can eat meat theres no difference between dog and cats they all feel pain and all want to live.Every living thing in this world has a right to life who are we to play god.I also would not hatch eggs then help rear an animal to kill it.To see it grow no thats not for me.Sorry dont mean to offend any body.I looked to be noisy as well.
