What on earth has come out of my hen?!

Recommended Posts

My Bluebell Susan has not been laying for some weeks now despite seeming ok, though don't think she's been 100%. Anyway, thought I'd see how she gets on and hoped she would right herself after a few weeks rest from laying. Today I've found this really weird bloody red tube type thing in the nest box and Susan is perched in the coop obviously not feeling well. Think I'll find a chicken friendly vet next week as she clearly isn't right. Any ideas??

I think it is a section of, or all of, her oviduct Ladylil. Inside out. I've seen 'lashes', which are oviduct lining, many times. The only whole oviduct I've seen was from one of our hybrids and it contained a shell-less egg, but was just a bloody mass like that. Obviously she won't lay again if that's the case, as ours didn't. I'm not sure if it is a reaction to simply running out of eggs? How old is she and have you a record of the number of eggs she has laid? Sounds daft I know, but some people do record that information. You need to keep 'it' in the freezer for the vet to section when you visit.

Is she OK apart from looking under the weather? Not bleeding from her vent or with a swelling abdomen? Is her comb still red?

Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it could be an expelled tumour; chickens are very good at expelling anything that they don't need inside, but this is unusual and, if she seems to be ailing, then I would get her to the vet as a precaution. If she is otherwise Ok, then i wouldn't bother, but would dissect the mass myself for future reference.

Just to add, that I've remembered seeing something like that once before, and it turned out to be intestinal in source rather than reproductive.
