Luvachicken
Ok, silly question time .... is corn on the cob corn the same as the dried corn the chickens can have as a treat ? I only ask because while we were on holiday my dad got them some corn cobs as a treat and by the time we got back one of them was broody. He said that you can't get corn cobs other times of the year and that he thought it would be nice for them. Does fresh corn have the same heating effects ? daxigirl
Nope they're different things. Corn on the cob (sweet corn) is popcorn type, corn is well corn like wheat. Hopefully I make sense.
mullethunter
Mixed corn usually has bits of maize in. Maize is the corn on corn on the cob.
Chickabee
Corn on the cob and dried corn are the same thing, ones just dried. Whether they both have the same heating effect, I don't know. Sorry
Chickabee
http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens See if you can copy and paste this into your browser. It's really interesting. It would suggest that fresh corn and dried should be treated differently. I guess because when it's fresh it contains a lot of water
cloud
Our two hens seem to think differently of it. The both can't get enough of the dried (maize) corn, but Siouxie is never that sure of fresh corn-on-the cob and can take it of leave it, while Coco loves it. Guest
My lot adore corn on the cob, when it has been hot I have given them frozen ones to keep them cool.
Luvachicken
Interesting Just that hubby also got them corn on the cob yesterday, so I was thinking that as they are NOT laying anyway and seem to have caught the moulting bug already, I may as well let them have it. At least any eggs I get might have a nice yellow yolk ............still waiting
Chickabee
I would let them have it. Love watching them eat it think it's just a coincidence re broodiness
Olly
I don't think corn on the cob would make them broody. They love it and it's a good distraction for them especially if you can hang it up.

I hung up half a cob fir the Pekins and half for the Wyandottes. I've just nipped home for lunch and the Wyandottes is finished and the Pekins just have the bit they can't get to to finish! Cat tails
I had a cob of sweet corn for dinner tonight and gave the ladies the cob with a few kernels on it. ... They don't get it ... It's still lying around in the garden. They will eat the corn when I get a few kernels of, but still look a little confused.
Chickabee
My first chickens didn't understand. It takes them a while. When they discover it they'll be unstoppable

Random_Girl66
Seeing this thread inspired me to treat my lot so I now have one cob hanging in the new girls run and one for the old girls. So far, after two days they have all totally ignored them! I even picked some kernels off which they swiftly gobbled up but they didn't make the link to the hanging cobs. Not sure how long to leave the cobs there before they "go off". Maybe I should unhook them and leave them on the ground instead? Any hints on how to get the girls interested? Kind off pointless as a treat at the moment !
