Valkyrie
Well I've tried different recipes and eventually this one popped up near the top of the Google list. Imperial measurements give too - which is a plus for me. Have been looking to make my own energy bars for walking and having got the thumbs up from everyone after doing the basic oats, will now add the seedy bits and the dates etc. I did cook mine on Gas mark 4 (actually it ended up mark 3 because the old girl is having hot flushes of her own) and I checked it after 15 minutes - just as well as it was perfect! http://www.food.com/recipe/chewy-english-flapjack-147286 I have a small square baking tin that I used which made it a bit thicker in depth. Makes 8 large slices. I made them last night and they've all gone!!!!
Space Chick
They sound gorgeous I may make some for OH as he does like a flapjack
Valkyrie
With the basic one I did 6oz of oats and 2oz jumbo oats. Yesterday I did the same 6oz but added a handful of sunflower seeds, a handful of sultanas and a small handful of chocolate chips. It was a fabulous gooey and chewy bar. Better than a Tracker bar, nice and moist with the sultanas. The only thing is it may be a little too sweet with all that lot. I think you can always use less sugar (and no chocolate). chickencam
Might give these a go, my OH likes chewy flapjack, whereas I prefer it more crispy. He has pretty much permanent nagging toothache at the moment so I may have to wait until that is sorted first. We have really struggled to find a chewy version. clucker1
OK, just about to make some....super thick question....what size tin do you use...I can't see it for looking. Will try the normal size tin I use, I am sure it must be on there, only I think I need to go to the opticians!
clucker1
Absolutely delicious! Made them with raisins too so they are healthy one of my 5 a day OH scoffed one down too. Still awaiting tasting by ED who out socialising but is a true flapjack fan and taster. Slightly more crunchy than normal, will try cooking for a slightly shorter time next time, prob tomorrow/Wed when all gone!
Valkyrie
My tin is about 7inch square. But when I do brownies I have them in a rectangular tin - same width but probably 10 inches wide. I used the square to make thicker slices - also doesn't dry out so quickly. Apparently if you cook the mixture longer you will get a crunchier, drier flapjack. Glad you had success One tip I read on one of the websites (can't remember if it was the same one) was to make 2 mixes and have one tray on the middle shelf and one on the top because it's usually hotter at the top of the oven. That was written by someone where one spouse liked crunchy and the other preferred gooey!
clucker1
Yummy yummy yum, these are sooo good, I have lost count of how many times I have made this recipe now, prob at least every other week since it was first put on here, so thank you. Added dried apricots and pumpkin seeds to this weeks variation, delicious and now must be a tinsy bit good for me! Great for packed lunches and a darn sight cheaper than those cereal bar things I used to buy

For church just traditional oats. But this recipie looks good will have to try it on the GC this weekend.
Valkyrie
I haven't put in apricots yet, but I must admit I do love dates in them - much better than raisins or sultanas.
