Solitary chicken - need advice

Hello everyone!

 

I posted a couple of months ago as we were hoping to get our WIR built and get our new Chickens before the Summer. Unfortunately our builders messed up a bit and we've only just now been able to get our lovely ladies.

 

We have a WIR (kind of, it's 5ft tall), and we have a Classic with 4 gorgeous hens. We've got an Amber-Lee, Cotswold Goldline, Black Tail and Black Star.

 

Our 4 year old daughter keeps changing their names but she's now decided to stick with Cupcake, Icing, Sweetie and Lollipop, although she's not sure which is which just yet.

 

I've not got any photo's of them yet as we only collected them yesterday and then they went straight in the house. This morning i let them out but didn't see them before i went to work

 

We're new to poultry keeping, although my parents have kept them all my life. But we're still learning.

 

They're about 17 weeks and are on layers pellets already, is that ok? It's what the seller suggested

 

I put in around 600g of layers pellets for them, around 2ltr of water with just under 2.5ml of tonic. They've also got some mixed grit in a tub and a foraging cake hanging from a bungee.

 

At the moment they're just on the ground, once they've scratched up all the grass i'm thinking Aubiose would be better to put in.

 

They're obviously not laying yet but i'm hopeful that within the next few weeks we'll have some lovely eggs

 

If you have any tips i'd be pleased to hear them!

 

I'll try uploading a photo of the run pre-hens and also when i get home i'll get a few of them out and about

How exciting! You'll get so much good advice and practical tips on here and don't forget to share all your news. I bet your little girl will love her new friends - hope she can remember which is which! Good luck .....

Hooray new chooks Did you think about them all day when you were at work and then rush home? That's what I did Looking forward to seeing photo's. I use photo bucket for mine. Upload them to the library on there, then paste the direct URL into the Img bit in the message here

Fantastic! I hope you have a lot of spare time as they are great for taking up all your spare time chicken watching .

Slowly Mullethunter lol. I painted the run last week and on Saturday half of the weld mesh was done. We were out at Dunsfold on Sunday and Monday was a washout. He's off to an airshow on Sunday so I doubt much, if anything will be done this weekend. The roof materials are due sometime this week.

 

I want to upload some progress pictures but I don't have Flickr or anything.

I understand that you have to be patient but it must be so frustrating! It'll be worth it in the end though - I can't wait until I have a big enough garden to make my girls a big WIR.

 

I didn't have a photo thing until I joined this forum but have now set up a photobucket account - it's very easy.

 

Don't suppose you went to the Red Bull Air Race a couple. Of weeks ago?
